Announcing our next ED Talks speaker...Mara King!

Mara King is the Director of Fermentation and Sustainability for @idest_hq, where she works at the intersection of food culture, agriculture, and systems design. Beyond Colorado, Mara teaches fermentation history and technique and co-produces a documentary film series exploring fermentation traditions in Southwest China and Taiwan. Her work centers on understanding how individuals, kitchens, farms, and communities fit within larger ecological and cultural systems—and how everyday food practices can strengthen those connections.

Join us on March 10 for Mara's presentation, “Restaurant Ecologies: Systems, Cycles and Cultures,” where she’ll share how to look to the natural world for inspiration, design circularity in your menu, and foster healthy ecologies.

A great first date looks like this…

Truth be told, we are great at First Dates. We both were “on the market” for a bit before we got together and one of the things that we had in common is that our first date “success rate” was very high.

Here are some of our tips that apply no matter what number date you’re on:

👂 Ask questions and listen. This one is basic but people get it wrong a lot. If you’re talking more than 50% of the time, you’re missing the whole point. And listening doesn’t mean waiting for your turn to speak. Engage. Ask follow up questions. Learn about them.

After 237 Wednesdays, we still find out new things about each other every single week.

🕯️Set the mood. It doesn’t have to be dark & sexy (but that’s definitely our preference in the beginning). Just know that whatever spot you pick is sending a signal. Choosing a sports bar says something different than dueling pianos. Also, if a person doesn’t know you yet, they might not be psyched to be alone in the woods with you on a hike.

🗓️ Have a plan, and a back up plan (and maybe a back up back up plan). Where are you going to go if the date is going well and you don’t want it to end? We always like to have a food, drink AND activity in mind. Maybe you do one thing, maybe you do 2, maybe you do all of them. Also, the layers help if one thing doesn’t work out (ie you can’t get seated for an hour). And take a minute to make sure those things are close to each other. The person you’re with will appreciate the thought and energy.

And if you’re like “If it goes well, I’ll just take em back to my place 😜 “ you’re kinda missing the point. You’ll get there when the time is right, you stallion you.

And if you need help with planning, just ask us! We’re always here and sometimes we even respond quickly. (Just know we’re going to ask you questions and we’re not going to do all the work for you)
