42nd lap around the sun complete. What a ride. Best advice I ever got from a Captain of a boat was "Hold on, sit down and shut up". Not great advice for life but great advice for getting in someone's else's boat. Followed closely by, "Right or wrong, I'm still the captain".

Mikee and I found ourselves in Placentia, Newfoundland trying to get back to Nova Scotia. With no room on the ferry, we opted for a spontaneous 3 day sea kayak trip off the coast in Placentia Bay, to explore the abandoned fishing community of Iona Island (originally known as the Ram's Islands). A once-remote settlement devastated by weather-related freak accidents, broader economic shifts, and government policy in the mid-1930s.

This trip turned into an adventure of discovery and exploration that we weren't expecting.

After 14 days and 115km of paddling, lining, wading, rapids, portaging and a 40km trackless hike, Saku and I, in a surreal series of events, came to Hubbard Rock - the scene of the tragic death from exhaustion on October 18th, 1903, of Leonidas Hubbard, deep in the Labrador wild. 100km as the crow flies from the nearest community.

Here was his last camp. He lay in the tent with doors open where my camera sits, a big fire blazed near my feet, and the heat reflected off the Rock back into their tent. The other two members, Dillon Wallace and Cree guide George Elson, left for help. Shortly after, the 31-year-old Hubbard, with his wife Mina back in New York City, closed the tent doors and went to sleep forever. They had been on their journey gone wrong for over 90 days, as told in the thrilling, well-known book "The Lure of the Labrador Wild". Written by Hubbard's friend Wallace, who survived by the skin of his teeth.

Ten years later, in 1913, the lawyer Wallace returned for another harrowing journey to erect the plaque. With an American friend and his skilled Labrador native guide, Gilbert Blake, they flipped their canoe in the rapids and lost the bronze tablet. Determined as he was to remember his companion who lived the real wilderness life with him, he kept going. Once reaching the site, he scoured the Rock clean of moss, utilized white lead intended for canoe repairs and mixed it with bacon fat over the campfire to create a paint. Then from 5am till sunset, with hammer and chisel, he tediously cut the inscription which was on the lost plaque into the Rock. They snipped a lock of Gilbert's coarse black hair, tied it to a branch with fishing line, trimmed it to a point and had a paintbrush to fill in the letters. Shortly after, at midnight, with candles lit, they held a service in the vast, dark, silent wilderness and felt that Hubbard was with them. They began their retreat to civilization the next morning.

All that remains of the paint today is the L you see in my picture. But the carved letters are still clear as day. Long and hard I sat around the Rock considering it all. It was mind-bending. And Hubbard was with us too. Continued in comments..

One kayak, two polar regions. 🛶❄️

I’ve been paddling the P&H Virgo in both Antarctica and Greenland, where these boats have been chosen for guides and guests because of their combination of durability, handling and performance in some pretty demanding environments. 🌊🧊

I was pretty happy to finally get one of my own this past summer from Mike and Krystle at @oldcreel in Fall River, NS. It’s been a great addition to the fleet — and one that I’m looking forward to putting plenty more miles on.

Special Delivery…Kayak-Style!

There is something truly unique about the Maritime paddling community. It’s a tight-knit tribe built on mutual support, collaboration, and a shared love for the water.

Case in point: A fellow PEI instructor, @lesterberezowski , ordered a rescue stirrup from @oldcreel for his upcoming programs. Around the same time, a student enrolled in our recent Ocean Discovery program happened to be picking up supplies at Old Creel.

Knowing we were all connected, the team at Old Creel handed the stirrup to the student to bring across to PEI for me, trusting it would find its way to Lester.

Fast forward to the final day of our Ocean Discovery program. We were paddling through the home bay where Lester lives, so I stashed the stirrup in my day hatch. I sent Lester a quick heads-up that we’d be passing through a nearby channel.

Lo and behold, as we rounded the bend, there he was waiting on the shore! I dug the stirrup out of my hatch and executed a proper kayak-to-shore delivery.

It’s easy to default to massive online retailers, but moments like this remind you why local matters. Old Creel isn’t just an outfitter, they care because they’re actively embedded in our community, supporting local initiatives, and out on the water right alongside us (you’ll often spot Mike @hfxpaddler out enjoying the rivers and ocean!).
