Starting with the essential ingredients for my remake of the 1932 Italian Futurist recipe "The Excited Pig," including scouting for the perfect salami. Test runs and final presentation of a new Futurist-inspired appetizer, "Propagation of the Network State" shared at Bushel Collective last weekend.

So grateful for this evening and all the amazing scent artists who turned it into an unforgettable sensory experience. 🤍

But it was the third table that stopped me in a heartbeat.

Fall into some olfactory art insanity this September 19th at @bushelcollective in Delhi NY. I will be sharing an excerpt from a musical work-in-process involving a terpene diety, a 19th century Florentine chemist and a few BDS etrogs. The sweet-smelling @kevinsheadrums will be joining me. Andreas Keller @olfactory_art_keller will be at the helm of his Perpetual Perfume Stew…bring your bottles to add to its “slow convergence on the statistical mass of contemporary perfumery.” Miriam Songster @gianttruffle will deliver a “tidy talk about fascism” and make a recipe from Marinetti’s Futurist cookbook, specially updated for our times. 4-7pm. Relevant cocktails will be available. A beautiful time to smell upstate.

I had such an amazing experience at the art gallery today, getting to smell the scent of Medusa. From what I gathered, the dead corals here represent the destruction caused by oil spills and climate change in the Philippines’ marine waters. While, the fresh scent of verde offers a symbol of hope and resilience against that devastation.

From the artist:
-🪸 Dead coral - Mineralic and saline, it carries the bitter truth of what is left behind-bone and stone stripped of vitality.

- 🛢️ Oil Spill. A suffocating blend of petrochemicals and gasoline that captures the invasive, toxic presence of oil spilling into the ocean.

- 🌊 Verde. A breath of hope amidst devastation, Verde blends the salty brightness of green mango flower with the lush vibrancy of the Philippines’ marine flora and fauna, a tribute to the resilience of the sea.

We sold out. So we opened additional seats!

The response to Using Scents in Museums has been incredible, and we are grateful to everyone who has already registered.

Because of the demand, we’ve released a limited number of additional tickets for tomorrow’s event.

Together, we’ll explore how scent can be used as a meaningful tool of interpretation within museums and cultural heritage contexts, drawing from current research, case studies, and practical applications.

Can’t attend live? No problem. The event will be recorded, and all registered participants will receive access to the recording afterward.

If you’ve been thinking about joining, now is your chance!
🎟️ Registration is open. Check the link in bio.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to decode one of nature’s greatest mysteries: scent. In “Artificial Olfaction or Olfactory Intelligence?”, neuroscientist Andreas Keller explores how AI is transforming fragrance research, from predicting how molecules might smell before they are ever synthesized to helping create entirely new scent experiences.

The article is based on a panel discussion with M.Dougherty, Pablo Meyer Royas, and Sean Raspet. They spoke about how smell is unlike vision or sound and how it is deeply personal, shaped by genetics, memory, culture, and lived experience. Can a machine ever truly understand something so subjective, or will human perception always remain essential?

Blending neuroscience, perfumery, and artificial intelligence, Keller’s fascinating essay invites us to rethink creativity, perception, and the future relationship between humans, molecules, and intelligent machines.

Xenya and I visited New York in May to validate a longstanding research idea and found a whole community of perfumers, scientists, artists, and technologists who agreed that we are in dire need of our soon to be olfactory nonprofit. More to come on this, but the connections, conversations, and of course company, did not disappoint. Shown here are exhibits from The New Museum, MoMa PS1, an olfactory talk, Newlab in Brooklyn, and a backyard party with my lifelong friends.

We are excited to announce the speakers for Using Smell in the Museum (July 25th, 2026). This international online speaker series brings together curators, educators, and museum practitioners working with scent as an interpretive tool in museums and cultural heritage spaces.

Our next featured speaker is Andreas Keller (Olfactory Art Keller, New York, USA), an academic interested in scent and the author of Philosophy of Olfactory Perception. He ran Olfactory Art Keller, a gallery focused on olfactory art in New York City, from 2020 to 2025.

He will be speaking on the panel “What are the challenges of using scent in museums?”, a discussion focused on conservation, accessibility, risk management, and visitor comfort in the development of olfactory projects. He will share insights from his work, including experiences, challenges, and best practices for implementing scent in cultural heritage spaces.

🌬️The future of scent and olfaction wafted into our nostrils on Thursday evening, as we used our senses to explore the many dimensions of smell and how technology is shaping what we have access to.

👃 Through a lively discussion and immersive scent stations, olfaction and tech experts Andreas Keller, Pablo Meyer, Sean Raspet, and M Dougherty engaged our sense of smell and imagination with questions about expanding our olfactory palate through modern AI technology.

Some key takeaways:

💻 Because scent is sensory and engages with the body, AI can never fully capture the individual nuances of the experience

🌳 People rarely smell things in isolation; smell is a combination of environment, apparatus of the body, and cultural context

🎚️ AI at-large is usually understood as generative AI, but is capable of much more - like predicting toxicity levels or diseases sooner (e-noses, diagnostics)

🧴 While using AI can create more individualized perfume experiences, the downside is that large corporations create “sloppier” fragrances through cheaper and faster production

🎨 Colors are described through RGBY but we mostly use words that always relate to objects when it comes to describing scent. Could we create an RGBY code for all 400 smell receptors?

Thank you to our experts for showing us a whole new world that is just below our noses! We would also like to thank Friedrichs Pontone for generously hosting us for the evening.

Introducing the Experimental Judges for the 12th Art and Olfaction Awards. This stellar cohort generously gave their time and expertise to evaluating not only scent, but also the video, photographic, and written documentation accompanying each submission for the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.

The Experimental category recognizes creative or experimental practitioners who make use of scent in unconventional or experimental ways, beyond the domain of traditional perfumery. Projects are created with the intention of existing within a broader cultural sphere, including art, performance, technology, design, media, academia, and related fields.

Among the judges, the artists are previous finalists and recipients of the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent, and intimately attuned to both the challenges and expansive possibilities of the field. The curators and researchers are those who have encountered and studied countless olfactory works. Together, they are especially well positioned to evaluate this year’s submissions.

We thank our Experimental Judges:
