We first met in St. Tropez when I was deejaying Naomi Campbell’s birthday. I was twenty-two, new to the Riviera, and you were the life of the party. You out-danced and outlived everyone. You and I hit it off and developed a special bond. Each time I visited LA from New York, you were there, introducing me to antique stores, bringing me to my now favorite restaurant, Il Piccolino, and giving me a trim before every gig. Each time I sat in your salon chair across from the Peninsula, you introduced me to a legend sitting in the chair next to me. The phrase “true Hollywood stories” must have been coined for you. Each holiday, you would honor me with vintage gems from your collection - cameo brooches, books signed by my crush, Stephanie Powers, and rare CD box sets. Each gift was a time capsule of your colorful history. If Forrest Gump had been a hairdresser, he would have been you. It was as if LA took place through the blades of your scissors. Behind the glitzy world of hair, you were a champion of the people. You spoke up for those without a voice and protested injustice with every bone in your body. After writing your autobiography, “Uppercut,” you asked if I would assemble a soundtrack of your life. I printed 100 CDs that you used to pitch your book which was later received with the acclaim it deserved. Your story is an inspiration, particularly for those who have struggled with addiction. As a shining example of sobriety, you saved many lives. You recently made a deal to tell your story on the big screen, an ever so fitting place for it to be told, and Julia Fox signed on to play you. You asked me if I would oversee the music and you have my word I will. You loved every friend and family member of mine with whom you crossed paths and they loved you. I will always be there for your family - Mingus, Olive, and of course Alex with whom you shared the most special relationship. Even when battling cancer, you celebrated my birthday. You never missed an opportunity to celebrate. You were truly one of a kind. You will be with me every time I wear one of your brooches and every morning I see your book on my shelf. I love you, Carrie White.
