I like a low-key birthday. Dinner with my family. A movie. We celebrated over the weekend since today everyone needed to be back at school/work. I’m going to the spa for a massage and a mani/pedi. I’ve worked hard this year on being present with my family while at the same time focusing on my work and myself. I can feel things shifting and expanding. As always, I’m trying to trust the process and pay attention. The world often feels like a catastrophe…but these small moments of beauty and joy are a counter to that. ❤️#thisis51

On display from Sept. 12, with an opening reception Sept.26, 2 to 3:30 pm @oliviaebaldwin @toryfairsculpture @kateholcombhale and @annakristinagoransson and myself. @oldschwambmill

Many thanks to writer Etty Yaniv (@etty.yaniv ) and @artspiel for this conversation about “Cutaway” with curator Olivia Baldwin ( @oliviaebaldwin ).

“Cutaway” is on view through September 24. Stay tuned for the details of our closing event and artist talk on the final day of the exhibition!

“For Cutaway, curator Olivia Baldwin worked the way she does in her own studio — building from the ground up, beginning with the artists rather than a theme. She had followed Eleanor Anderson, J Stoner Blackwell, Lucy Kim, Kirstin Lamb, and Hai-Wen Lin for years, looking for where their materials might overlap and where they might productively rub against one another. Meeting with them, a shared concern surfaced: how each artist asserts and then loosens the limits of an object, a body, a pattern. Their means are strikingly varied — discarded plastic bags, cross stitch, dyed silk and chain, cast flounder and teeth, a kite pitched toward the upper windows — bound by saturated color and touch. The body recurs throughout, rarely pictured, more often left as a trace in the material. Baldwin discusses the show’s bottom-up beginnings, what its materials share, and the withholding behind its title.“ — Etty Yaniv ( @etty.yaniv )
