Hello again from UIUC! It’s been another busy week! We made it through our second in vitro and are almost to our third. We’ve worked out all the kinks and have become a well-oiled machine when it comes to prepping and processing samples. When I’m not helping with in vitro, there are steers to halter break, cattle to work, and preparations to make for my own research project.

My favorite experience this week was learning how to preg check by both palpation and internal ultrasound.

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the internship. Time really does fly when you’re having fun!

I'm still not sure I have the right words for my last springfield as a junior exhibitor & wrapping up my time serving on team purebred's junior board. Such a bittersweet week surrounded by some of my favorite people. Forever thankful for my people, the memories made and the miles traveled ❤️‍🔥

This past week has been busy in the best way possible!

Saturday, I went on a pasture tour to learn about virtual fencing collars- it was so impressive. (Slides 1&2)

This week we worked with our steers leading them around the pen. Unfortunately, Hangman has a new habit of trying to lay down while leading- I guess it’s better than pulling us around! (Slide 3)

On Tuesday I went to an informational lunch about LRP’s with Farm Credit and a stress mitigation tool known as FerAppease. (Slide 4)

Today, I went to the Dudley Smith Field Day, where presenters discussed current research underway at the Dudley Smith Farm (Slide 5) There still was a herd of cattle to keep me comfortable— the black dots in the background! (6)

Last Friday, we arrived to the farm with a pen of calves loose. It only took a few minutes to put them away and a group of them were happy as can be in the back of the isolation barn. (Slide 7)

And lastly a picture from when we fly tagged a few weeks ago at the beef farm (Slide 8)

Update at UIUC! We’ve been hard at work with our steers every morning, bright and early! They’ve come a long way and are almost ready for the “show ring”.

This past week, we helped with our first in vitro trial. Seeing the entire process firsthand was awesome, and it definitely kept us busy! We collected rumen samples from 137 steers and incubated them for 24 and 48 hours in a diet mixture. Afterward, we divided the samples into vials for testing microbiome, protozoa, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), NH₃, dH₂, and gas production. It was a very hands-on three days!
One trial down, four more to go!

I also received my summer research project, which will focus on identifying rumen protozoa in an efficient and timely manner while processing a high volume of samples. I’m excited to get started and can’t wait to share more about it in future posts.

Stay tuned for more updates!
