He built a $100 million company, then walked away...

Olowo-n’djo Tchala grew up in Togo watching women work in brutal conditions for almost nothing. So he co-founded @alaffia and paid them three times the average family income in the region.

But as the company grew, the mission faded. Olowo-n’djo left, then realized the women he had fought for no longer had anyone protecting their interests.

He returned as CEO in June 2024, restored the core values of the buisness, and Alaffia has since posted 3x year-over-year growth.

That’s Good Money.

"Africa has to stop being a raw material producer. Africans need to control the destiny of their resources."

@olowondjo's vision for Alaffia doesn't stop at 100,000 cooperative members. It doesn't stop at a revenue milestone.

The metric is scope: how many West African founders can follow the path that @alaffia opens. How many products reach global markets without losing control to foreign processors.

This is long-term thinking that most companies (and most countries) don't operate with.

Today is Juneteenth and we honor freedom, resilience, culture, and the generations who continue to shape a more just future.

At Alaffia, community care has always been at the center of our work from fair trade partnerships to investing in education, maternal care, and clean water access around the world.

Here’s to reflection, gathering, continuing the work forward, and finding joy even when life is hard because that in itself is an act of resistance.

Alaffia is closed today in honor of the holiday.

@olowondjo told us a story I haven't stopped thinking about.

One of his cooperative members called her father to tell him she had monthly income. Her father's response: "How can someone like you (someone who can't read or write) have THAT? Only educated people earn like that."

She sends him half of her salary every month.

This is the proof of concept. A business model that works at scale for people every other model wrote off.

Here’s what @olowondjo learned about how to bring his country Togo in West Africa out of poverty:

You have to derive value from your cultural heritage, NOT constantly trying to copy what other western cultures have done.

This clip came from our recent episode of Not Another Podcast with Olowo, live on all platforms!

70% of the population in Western Africa lives in rural areas. And 80% of those people don’t know how to read or write.

Yet the system says in order to get out of poverty, you NEED to learn how to read and write.

So how can they use their existing skillsets to create something (in this case: shea butter) that the market ACTUALLY wants?

This was the idea that drove @olowondjo to build @alaffia
