Win or learn.

When @jack.meggison started his junior track and field season with a National Championship at Nike Indoor Nationals, we all had great hopes for how the rest of the season would go. But opportunities bring expectations and expectations can feel like pressure and pressure can mess with your confidence and confidence affects your running.

It was hard season as Jack wrestled with the mental side of running and the disappointment and confusion that comes when your body doesn’t cooperate with your desire.

As parents, we wrestled with how to support him. Did he need a hug or a push? Maybe both? Did he need to talk it out or have a dinner absent of any discussion about running?

We were proud of how Jack reached out to coaches, mental performance experts and track and field enthusiasts alike for wisdom. He humbled himself seeking answers and accepted responsibility when he let down teammates. That’s a lot to embrace for a highly competitive and driven kid in a social media world.

We still feel the scars from this one. Healing is still on the way for him. But we couldn’t be prouder of how Jack continued to work. He showed up even when it would have been easier to hide out or throw in the towel.

For all the moments in which he didn’t win this spring, we trust that the lessons learned and the character built will last long after the spikes are shelved.

We love you, Jacker.

Fun with @ymegs28 at Junior Parents Weekend! Highlights of our time at Notre Dame:

☘️ Extended time with York’s friends - funny, kind & bright
☘️ Meeting some of his favorite professors
☘️ Getting 3rd place in the 2004 trivia contest 🙌
☘️ President’s Dinner with the Iowa Crew
☘️ Watching Big 12 and ISU basketball at the hotel
☘️ Time with our oldest and reflecting on the growth he’s experienced at his “home under the dome.”

So grateful to share this weekend together and thankful to Uncle Rand for hanging w Jack. Go Irish! 💙💛💙

Twenty-four years and counting with my favorite guy! These two kids had no idea what would come their way but it has been brighter, sweeter, tougher, calmer and wilder than we could have ever “imagined.” Happy anniversary! Let’s go get 25!

Cold, snowy Nike XC Regionals for @jack.meggison made for a crazy, but memorable, race for all.🥶

Just missed the championship race, but the DCG Stampede dominated their open race to place first with 56 points and ended up 3rd overall out of 259 teams. Jack was in the top 10% of finishers, but more importantly, had fun capping off his junior year of XC.

Jack is looking forward to two weeks off and then the green grass of track and field season!!

PS: also squeezed in a short, but delightful, visit with Grandma McVinua and Ant B (@brendamcvinua)!

The journey of a runner is filled with highs and lows. Some days just aren’t your day. Today was one of those for @jack.meggison.

In June he set his sights on the state meet on Nov 1st. He was determined to prove that he was more than an 800 runner. And boy did he have some shining moments, including a new PR of 16:03 earlier this season. But a nagging illness caused him to struggle through his final two races and he and his team came up a little short today at state.

I’ll remember Jack’s junior XC season as one where he kept trying new ways to run a 5k, showing a growth mindset and a determination to learn and excel at cross country. Some worked better than others, but after each race he responded with positivity and a belief in the next opportunity for himself and his team.

He has one more race next weekend as his team competes at NXR. Maybe he’ll feel healthy and that will be his breakout moment? Or maybe he’ll simply close the junior year XC chapter and move on to track and field season. Either way, we’re proud of his courage and strength to trust God in the journey and for the lessons he learned along the way.
