Does gel really destroy your nails?

Usually, no.

Gel itself is not what “destroys” the nail plate. Most damage happens from how the product is applied, filed, maintained, and removed.

Over-filing the natural nail.
Aggressive removal.
Peeling product off.
Using the wrong product for the nail type.
Wearing damaged lifting for too long.
Repeatedly removing healthy layers of the natural nail during every appointment.

That is where the problem starts.

A properly performed gel service should leave the natural nail protected underneath — not paper-thin after removal.

And this is also why I don’t believe every client needs to completely remove their gel at every appointment. In many cases, we leave a thin safety layer and work over it instead of repeatedly filing down to the natural nail.

So when someone says, “Gel ruined my nails,” the better question might be:

Was it the gel… or was it the technique?
