Autism is not a bad word. Disability is not a bad word. Today I’m painting Raquel. Raquel @onallclaws is a nail artist who went viral when she posted an amazing video about her autistic experience. She likened it to saying your whole life “my arm hurts” being told by everyone “oh it’s supposed to hurt,” Then finally being diagnosed and having answers. Painting an autistic woman of color feels like it adds another layer, because people have such specific assumptions about what autism “looks like” and it so often skews white male in the public imagination. that’s exactly what makes Raquel’s portrait matter so much every person I paint is another crack in that single image. Toilet Talks Mutual Aid Market Art Auction is now up and running! The auction closes at 11:59pm on Sunday 17th of Dec so place your bids and support your local QTBIPOC artists with their incredible artworks and generous donations :) You’ll also be able to revisit the graffiti from the Toilet Talks installation earlier in the year, now cut up into pieces that can be hung up on a wall!
