🦠🧫chlorine washed chicken🧽🫧 So.. I recently saw a TikTok of a person panicking about the fact that chicken was being washed with chlorine after processing. The USA (and most areas of the rest of the world) do or used to wash their chicken at the end of the slaughter process with a chlorine wash. The idea is to get rid of bacterial and other pathogens that can harm the public. And this is correct: Chlorine washing will get rid of more harmful pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter on our chicken. But that sounds gross right?🤮..Based on UK legislation🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, chlorine wash poses no public health risk and there are plenty of other places where chlorine washes are used such as lettuce. However, the UK banned chlorine washing chicken in the late 90s in order to encourage better welfare and cleanliness habits on farm before they even get to the slaughter house. AGAIN: The idea was to lower the risk of exposure to pathogens on farm before the slaughter process, and thus promoting good animal welfare. This legislation was based off of WELFARE not the public perception that chlorine wash is “bad for you”. Based off of what I have read, I think the argument in the USA 🇺🇸 should be based more on chicken welfare before they get to the slaughter house, and not the chlorine vs chlorine free debate. Know where you are buying chicken from- do you have a non-commercial local abattoir that sells to the public? What brand of chicken are you typically buying at the grocery store? What are the company’s welfare policies? What is your opinion on this? PSA: please cook your chicken at 165 F/ 74 C to eliminate Salmonella and other harmful bacteria ✨ Ft. my at home covid graduation picture in my family’s chicken coop. Don’t worry I washed my hands after this 🤗 . . . . . . #vetmed #veterinarymedicine #equine #equinemedicine #lexington #dogs #wisco #internship #thinkag #poultry #dogsofinstagram #vetstudent #veterinarymedicine #poultrymed #dvm #animal #vetclinic #wolf #veterinarystudent #wolves #medvetlife #veterinerhekim #vetsofinstagram #veterinarios #vetsurgeon #foal #repo #publichealth #onehealth #farmlife

The wind might have died down but my passion for large animal veterinary medicine certainly has not. My cup is still very full from getting the opportunity to speak to future large animal vet colleagues at the @osuvetcollege. It was amazing to see over 200 students from 17+ vet schools come together to learn about food animal medicine and practice. Speaking to the next generation of future colleagues always reignites my passion to continue advocating for large animal medicine. The needs of the next generation are different but the profession is still one of the best. You can try to change my mind but if you know me at all you know you will not be able to. 💁‍♀️ A huge thank you to @osufac for inviting me to speak at the Food Animal Student Symposium and to all my future colleagues I got to meet and talk about the profession with. A special thanks to @haileysnyder55 for making sure I was in the right place at the right time with working technology. I hope to see you all again next year or sooner in my truck! 💕🐴🐮🐷🐂🐑🦙🐐💕 #largeanimalvet #veterinarian #cowvets #horsedoctor #vetstudent #futurecolleagues #famss #ruralvet
