This summer’s wildfires have been devastating – so what if next summer’s were preventable?

Just over ten years ago, the smog from coal plants contributed to over 30 million tonnes of climate pollution each year. Then, philanthropy answered the call.

The @oncleanair campaign helped close the last remaining coal-fired power plant in Ontario. The @metcalf.foundation, the Salamander Foundation, the Taylor Irwin Family Fund at the @torontofdn , the Helen McCrea Peacock Foundation, and the Echo Foundation helped fund it.

I’m Serena Purdy, and I’m a policy researcher. In our recent submission to the Federal government we took a deeper look at some of Ford’s claims about the airport expansion, that make it really clear who he’s really making feel safer in Ontario.

In Video 1 we covered the impact of Bill 110 for local voice, and in Video 2 we talked about ownership and control of Billy Bishop and Toronto’s harbourfront

We also took a look at the claim that this change is being made due to increased passenger demand. Statistics Canada data shows the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area already has excess airport capacity, suggesting increased activity at YTZ would largely shift passengers from other airports rather than generate new growth. If anything, the data shows underutilization, of the smaller airports, particularly at YHM in Hamilton.

These figures, shown in millions, reveal how air travel is shaped by volatile events—from the pandemic and trade agreement shifts to fuel price spikes. What’s clear is the total dominance of YYZ, a fact the smaller airports curiously omit from their reports. There was a statistically significant drop in total Canadian passenger traffic following the 2020 pandemic restrictions. However, it did not affect the overall 10 year trend for passenger demand at Billy Bishop.

There is a small 2025 dip for YTZ (2 million to 1.75 million) that is most likely just passengers shifting from local hubs to global routes via Pearson. What is interesting is that, even in light of external or short-term volatility, Looking at a full decade of data there is absolutely no significant growth trend or genuine demand for more capacity at Billy Bishop Airport.

Why sell our waterfront and an international airport to JP Morgan, when you could just establish an express line to Hamilton like the UP express to Pearson? One option sells us out, the other helps Ontario businesses.

It’s the last Saturday of the month, so it’s time for another #FightFord protest. Doug Ford’s policies irritate me. He promised that life would improve for Ontarians, but recent polls show most believe that was false. We face crises like rising class sizes, an underfunded healthcare system, cuts to OSAP increasing student debt, and poor wildfire management in northern First Nations. The government’s failure to address these issues affects us all. I oppose their misconduct. Until change occurs, we must fight back. P.S. I chose this theme because I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and see parallels: we are like Avalanche against Shinra (aka the Ford government), fighting for Ontario, like Cloud’s planet. #WorthFightingFor #HamOnt #Community ✊🏽
