Extreme heat does not just make working conditions uncomfortable. It can create economy-wide costs that are easy to overlook.

For Caribbean economies, the Thermal Economic Tax can show up in three major ways:

Labour Productivity Depletion: High heat stress can severely reduce working capacity in industries such as agriculture, construction and municipal maintenance. Lower hourly output, reduced working hours and necessary cooling breaks can compound across industries, creating broader supply disruptions and economic losses.

Energy Grid Strain & Capital Diversion: As temperatures rise, demand for cooling increases. Higher peak electricity loads can place additional pressure on energy systems, potentially increasing fuel requirements and forcing governments and utilities to divert resources toward short-term grid stabilization rather than longer-term productive investment.

Public Health Overhead: Extreme heat can increase heat-related illness and cardiovascular stress, while changing environmental conditions can also influence the transmission of some vector-borne diseases. The result can be higher public health expenditures alongside reduced workforce participation.

In Jamaica, these pressures take on even greater significance as the country continues its recovery from Hurricane Melissa.

When an economy is already managing the cost of disaster recovery, additional thermal stress can place another layer of pressure on workers, infrastructure, public finances and economic productivity.

Understanding the Thermal Economic Tax is the first step toward building policies and investments that reduce it. https://envirotekgroup.org/media/publications/thermal-economic-tax-report-jamaican-situation

Young people are already leading.

At Caribbean Youth Leading Change, we explored what it takes to support that leadership, from having the space and resources to act, to being trusted with responsibility and having opportunities to influence the decisions that affect our communities.

There was no single answer. But there was a shared reminder:

Youth leadership is not something we have to create. It is something we have to recognise, support and make room for.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the conversation possible.

🌱 DAY 1 ,THE JOURNEY BEGINS! 🌎

Today marks the first day of an important and inspiring journey one centered on learning, meaningful connections, collaboration, and action.

I am honored to be part of this initiative and to contribute my voice and experience to a movement that aligns strongly with the work we are advancing through @cosmossolution.haiti in Haiti and across the Caribbean.

For me, participating in initiatives like this is about more than being present. It is about building bridges, strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge, and bringing ideas into action.

At Cosmos Solution, we are committed to developing and implementing practical solutions in renewable energy, biogas, clean cooking, organic waste management, and the circular economy, while creating meaningful impact for communities and contributing to a more resilient and sustainable Caribbean.

🌎 This is why I show my support for this campaign. Let’s support the movement. Let’s spread the word. Let’s create impact together. 💪🌱

Jamaica’s dry spells can be influenced by several interacting climate factors.

El Niño conditions, rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns can contribute to periods of reduced rainfall. At the same time, warmer conditions can increase evaporation, causing soil and surface water to lose moisture more quickly.

For agriculture, the combination can mean less water available when crops need it most.

Understanding these changing conditions can help farmers, communities and decision-makers plan ahead, improve water management and strengthen Jamaica’s climate resilience.

The challenge is not simply about less rain. It is also about how quickly available water is lost and how effectively we manage the water that remains.

Two representatives from CYCN Grenada recently participated in a conference in Jamaica, gaining valuable knowledge and sharing their perspectives on climatesmart practices, climate action, and ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change.🇯🇲🌎

Throughout the conference, participants collaborated to develop a Youth Declaration, ensuring that the voices, ideas, and priorities of young people were reflected in the discussions and outcomes.

We are especially proud to celebrate our representative, Arian Scott just 16 years old, and the youngest at the time who was given the opportunity to present and represent the voices of young people on an international platform. 🎤🌍

From learning to speaking up, our representatives continue to demonstrate that young people have a powerful role to play in shaping a climateresilient future.

🇬🇩 We are proud of our representatives and the way they represented Grenada and CYCN. Keep leading, learning, and making your voices heard! 💚🌱

Under this year's global theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," the United Nations in Jamaica celebrates the incredible drive, resilience, and vision of young people across our island and the wider Caribbean.

While young people navigate diverse social and economic realities, their core goals remain shared: dignity, quality education, decent work, meaningful participation, and a sustainable future.

The UN in Jamaica remains firmly committed to youth inclusion at every level.

Different contexts. Common aspirations. Shared principles.

This International Youth Day, we’re listening to young Caribbean voices on what meaningful youth engagement means to them.

Young people across the Caribbean may live in very different contexts, but the aspirations that shape their leadership are often shared: to be respected, to have their voices heard, to contribute meaningfully and to help shape decisions that affect their lives and futures.

Over the next few posts, youth advocates will share their perspectives on what it takes to meaningfully engage young people.

But first — we want to hear from YOU. 👇

Which of these principles speaks to your experience?
✨Dignity and Respect
✨Power Sharing and Equity
✨Transparency and Accountability
✨Inclusion and Representation
✨Institutionalization and Sustainability

Tell us in the comments and follow along as youth advocates share their perspectives.
