We focus on gun violence reduction among Lexington youth & young adults, ages 10-29, by leveraging public resources and community partnerships.

In a recent session of @onelexingtonky in-school mentoring program, we talked about the #PowerOfWords and how the words we use and receive, can impact the way we show up in certain spaces. I love the opportunity to put into these young people in relative and unique ways.

Yesterday, 3/4 of the @onelexingtonky team had the opportunity to testify in front of the Juvenile Justice Oversight Council at the State Capital in Frankfort, KY, to talk about the work that our community does to address youth and young adult gun violence in Lexington. While we still have much more work to do, others have taken notice of the collective progress we have in our city over the last 5 years and want to partner with us to see that work expand. We talked about our “All Hearts On Deck” strategy, our in-school mentoring programs in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools, how the city’s crisis response works, the importance of formerly system-involved individuals being able to facilitate programs in the schools and much more.

Thankful for @mayorgorton and past and present city councils for the continued support and commitment to addressing this issue. We hope to see that support grow in the coming year so that we can truly address root causes at the core.

Our hope and prayer is that lawmakers can build policies and laws that not only provide our most vulnerable young people with accountability, but restoration as well. In order for a community to be “safe”, it has to actively HEAL.

Our community has experienced a lot lately, and many people are still processing grief, trauma, fear, anger, and loss.

You don’t have to process it alone.

I’m currently accepting new clients for in-person and telehealth counseling for teens, students, young adults, and adults.

Several insurance plans are accepted, including Medicaid, and sponsored sessions may also be available through my partnership with ONE Lexington when funding is available.

This past weekend, Lexington experienced a tragic mass shooting in a community park. But with the condolences also came the racist comments blaming this issue on the black community. And I am shutting that down right now.

Gun violence is a uniquely American issue and we all - as Americans - own this issue. We all own the underlying policies that put black communities in these positions. From mental health to food deserts to community investment: the solutions belong to us all. And we all own finding and deploying those solutions.

As our flag says: United We Stand, Divided We Fall. We must stand united and solve these problems together, not continue to divide ourselves. So let’s get to work.

My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one young man from @onelexingtonky summer program losing his life. While trying to keep 4 young people covered and safe during the shooting, a person 8 inches from me was shot tonight…. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been THAT close to gunfire. Im limited in what I can say because there’s a lot of pieces to this incident that are moving and evolving right now but….Opening fire into a crowd at a peaceful event, in broad daylight, with women and children present is unacceptable! What part of the game is this?????

Seeing my brother Corey Dunn trying to help with CPR, Larry Lamont Johnson, Terry Dumphord, and Evany Romero on the scene, to my little bro @trapquidi_ lifting that baby up who got shot to Lexington Fire Department, Lexington Police Department, and EMS responding to multiple victims in real time. The current council member Tyler Morton and 2 former 1st district council members James Brown & Chris Ford were on the scene talking to folks as well. Seeing community members do their best to help and assist. Even in such a tragic moment, we saw just how amazing and loving the people of East End really are. This is not normal. We come together every year as a family and kick it on the Eastside and we haven’t had something like this happen, EVER.

If you are trauma or mental health specialist, please email me at dcarama@lexingtonky.gov We are going to create a space early next week for those affected by tonight’s shooting to come and get support and resources. To the loved ones of today’s victims, please let things run its course! Justice will be served, I promise you. An eye for an eye just leaves the whole community blind. Praying for our entire city tonight. I love yall…

UPDATE: I want to shout out 2 RETIRED Firefighters who were the 1s that performed CPR..

LV Hayden- Retired Bat Chief and Greg Gerton.
They dropped everything in their hands and ran to the gun shot victims and did what they do best ❤️🙏🏾

In response to an uptick in community violence in the Falcon Crest apartment complex, @onelexingtonky is increasing community presence in the area to support youth and families. If you remember, less than a year ago, we successfully implemented the “Centre Parkway Safe Action Plan” in collaboration with the Tates Creek Community Coalition, Tates Creek Academies, and public safety, and were able to slow down a lot of the criminal activity that was happening at the time in the Centre Parkway area. We hope that a community response in Falcon Crest will have the same effect. Email me at dcarama@lexingtonky.gov for more info on our Falcon Crest Community-Based Safety Action Plan.
