Last night @onelexingtonky and many of its community partners went to East End to show love and share resources to neighbors who were recently affected by gun violence. At the corner of 5th & Chestnut, we were joined by William Wells Brown Elementary School staff (led by principal Ebony Hutchinson), United Way of the Bluegrass and staff from the WayPointe Center, Lexington Housing Authority, Lexington Public Library, Voyage Movement, Walker Reconstruction, LLC, WWB Neighborhood Association, Council Member Tayna Fogle, District 1 , members of there public safety, volunteers, and other community partners.

We want to extend another big THANK YOU to everyone that came out yesterday and we hope this momentum continues moving forward.

After a moment of prayer, we began walking the neighborhood to distribute fresh food shares from the local, black-owned farming company, Black Soil: Our Better Nature. While going door to door, we were able to connect several residents to job opportunities (including second chance hiring), English learning classes, relocation services, scholarships for skills & trade certification, mental health support (including teens who have been struggling since the latest shooting), and even ran into the mother of the city’s latest homicide victim, Buck, and loved on her and offer some support for her and her family moving forward. This was an incredible display of unity and love, showing what a coordinated crisis response looked like. The ONE Lexington team will be shifting the focus of its outreach efforts to the East End area for the next several weeks and we are looking for committed community partners to join us! We believe this can be replicated throughout the city by willing community partners. If you’d like to get involved, contact our Crisis Response Coordinator, Kenneth Payne at KPayne@lexingtonky.gov by @onelexingtonky

My late daughter, Kamaria Spaulding’s birthday is coming up at the end of this month and my emotions are all over the place of course. In episode 8 of @itstimelexington #GoodGuyGuide podcast I open up about the time my beautiful and emotionally intelligent daughter exposed my male privilege. A powerful exchange with her that I’ll never forget. And I want to make clear, Kamaria has several loving men in her life that honored her wishes as well. I think the bigger point she was making to me, was that she wanted me to also honor her wishes and that created an additional safe space for her. Consent is something we talk a lot about with the boys in our @onelexingtonky mentoring groups. You can watch the entire episode here - https://youtube.com/lexingtonitstime by @onelexingtonky

“So many of the issues with our young boys starts with a lack of emotional intelligence. Don’t be so focused on teaching our boys to be strong, that we forget to let them know that it’s ok to FEEL.” - @devinecarama taken in Lexington, Kentucky by @onelexingtonky

Yesterday, 3/4 of the @onelexingtonky team had the opportunity to testify in front of the Juvenile Justice Oversight Council at the State Capital in Frankfort, KY, to talk about the work that our community does to address youth and young adult gun violence in Lexington. While we still have much more work to do, others have taken notice of the collective progress we have in our city over the last 5 years and want to partner with us to see that work expand. We talked about our “All Hearts On Deck” strategy, our in-school mentoring programs in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools, how the city’s crisis response works, the importance of formerly system-involved individuals being able to facilitate programs in the schools and much more.

Thankful for @mayorgorton and past and present city councils for the continued support and commitment to addressing this issue. We hope to see that support grow in the coming year so that we can truly address root causes at the core.

Our hope and prayer is that lawmakers can build policies and laws that not only provide our most vulnerable young people with accountability, but restoration as well. In order for a community to be “safe”, it has to actively HEAL. taken in State Capitol Building by @onelexingtonky

My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one young man from @onelexingtonky summer program losing his life. While trying to keep 4 young people covered and safe during the shooting, a person 8 inches from me was shot tonight…. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been THAT close to gunfire. Im limited in what I can say because there’s a lot of pieces to this incident that are moving and evolving right now but….Opening fire into a crowd at a peaceful event, in broad daylight, with women and children present is unacceptable! What part of the game is this?????

Seeing my brother Corey Dunn trying to help with CPR, Larry Lamont Johnson, Terry Dumphord, and Evany Romero on the scene, to my little bro @trapquidi_ lifting that baby up who got shot to Lexington Fire Department, Lexington Police Department, and EMS responding to multiple victims in real time. The current council member Tyler Morton and 2 former 1st district council members James Brown & Chris Ford were on the scene talking to folks as well. Seeing community members do their best to help and assist. Even in such a tragic moment, we saw just how amazing and loving the people of East End really are. This is not normal. We come together every year as a family and kick it on the Eastside and we haven’t had something like this happen, EVER.

If you are trauma or mental health specialist, please email me at dcarama@lexingtonky.gov We are going to create a space early next week for those affected by tonight’s shooting to come and get support and resources. To the loved ones of today’s victims, please let things run its course! Justice will be served, I promise you. An eye for an eye just leaves the whole community blind. Praying for our entire city tonight. I love yall…

UPDATE: I want to shout out 2 RETIRED Firefighters who were the 1s that performed CPR..

LV Hayden- Retired Bat Chief and Greg Gerton.
They dropped everything in their hands and ran to the gun shot victims and did what they do best ❤️🙏🏾 by @onelexingtonky

What a summer! First and foremost, shout-out to ONE Lexington’s Program Coordinator, Tania Walker, for continuing to take our summer program to the next level. Her professionalism, organizational skills, and connection with program participants have been a game-changer for this initiative. Thank you to all the volunteers and contractors who mentored our teens this summer! Thank you, parents and guardians, for entrusting us with your seeds. Thank you, Mayor Linda Gorton and the City Council, for your continued support of this program. Thank you, the Charles Young Community Center board, The Hub for Innovative Learning & Leadership, and the University of Kentucky, for providing our program with an inclusive and welcoming home this summer.

Big shout-outs to all the youth who won awards at our “Recognition Day” on Tuesday! 90 percent of the youth in our program have been directly affected by gun violence, so our goal is to address that trauma and teach life skills that will keep them out of the cycle of conflict. But more importantly, we want to help them heal, grow, and provide opportunities. This summer, youth accessed group trauma-informed care services, connected with higher education and employment opportunities, and discussed dating violence, substance use disorder, conflict resolution, effective communication, the importance of structure, and so much more.

Next, ONE Lexington’s team will focus on street outreach and crisis response across our city for the rest of the summer. Then, in September, we will pivot toward our in-school mentoring collective, where we aim to support the kids from our summer program and many more. Thank you, Femi SpecialEffects Oyeniran, for capturing some incredible images all summer! taken in Lexington, Kentucky by @onelexingtonky

In response to an uptick in community violence in the Falcon Crest apartment complex, ONE Lexington is increasing community presence in the area to support youth and families. Yesterday, we started our “Neighborhood Healing Wednesdays” block parties featuring live music, free food, kid activities, mental health specialists, domestic violence advocates, and youth mentors. We will also be doing “teen nights” on Tuesdays and “After Midnight” engagements on the weekends.

Identify ways that you, your family, or organization can be a part of this rapid-response plan. This action plan is informed by and in support of the Tates Creek Community Coalition’s recently constructed strategic plan, which works to address more of the long-term issues in the Centre Parkway area. Contact Larry Lamont Johnson at ljohnson@lexingtonky.gov if you’d like to get involved!

Remember, if it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to lose one. WE ALL PLAY A PART. Check out our citywide “All Hearts On Deck” gun violence prevention strategy HERE - https://content.lexingtonky.gov/sites/default/files/2025-06/AHOD%20Current%20Plan%20-%20FINAL.pdf

In response to an uptick in community violence in the Falcon Crest apartment complex, @onelexingtonky is increasing community presence in the area to support youth and families. If you remember, less than a year ago, we successfully implemented the “Centre Parkway Safe Action Plan” in collaboration with the Tates Creek Community Coalition, Tates Creek Academies, and public safety, and were able to slow down a lot of the criminal activity that was happening at the time in the Centre Parkway area. We hope that a community response in Falcon Crest will have the same effect. Today, in partnership with @cacadvocate , we gave away $200,000 in grants through our N.O.C.A.P. Program and our @onelexingtonky Violence Prevention Grant opportunity. As we move beyond 150 consecutive days without a criminal homicide ino ur city, we were reminded today of the importance of connectivity, collaboration, and the “all hearts on deck” strategy that drives the city’s violence prevention ecosystem. Thank you city council & @mayorgorton for your continued support!

Congrats to all of the amazing nonprofits and businesses that were awarded today. Government changes every 2-4 years, so to make sure the work of addressing gun violence in our community continues, we must invest in and build the capacity of our grassroots organizations!
