“The Dutch Castaway” was first performed at Boston Fringe 2026 where it swept The People’s Choice thanks to a wave of support. With just a single wooden chest and 18th century costumes, our 40 minute queer period drama transported a Somerville barbershop to a desolate Atlantic island in 1726.

We are so excited to return to this new work by Lawrence Gullo with a fully-staged production at @loov_the , which will feature the original cast under the continued direction of Cas Berta; this time with sound design and lighting design in the gorgeous and cavernous space on the stage of this beloved Somerville art studio.

“Is it strange to say I wish we could take his hand?”

The actors Lemaris Bell, Sebastian Crane, and Zach Fuller brought 18th century sailors to life in The Boston Fringe premiere of “The Dutch Castaway”. Under the direction of Cas Berta and supported by the dramaturgy of Justin Peavey, this cast dove deep into research about the hardships of life on British merchant ships and the complex realities of queer experiences in that era.

We are so excited that modern audiences responded passionately to a period piece. LGBTQ+ histories have been hidden away for centuries and it was such an honor to bring Leendert Hassenbosch’s memory into the spotlight during this very special festival.
