Some photos from our 1 Year Anniversary Hike I still can’t believe it has rained two years in a row haha but i guess that’s the kind of community this is, finding people who willingly trek in the rain on a Sunday afternoon… and somehow enjoy it! At this point we just accept it as part of The Outside experience I also wanted to shoutout some of the people and brands that have been part of the journey @hideawaysingapore has been with us since the very start. One of the first to believe in what we were trying to do (literally like a month in). Their contrast therapy has been a big part of how I recover before and after expeditions, especially with all the tightness and joint pain from carrying loads everyday. @performancebikefitter is the place for hypoxia training in Singapore. There’s only so much we can do here to prepare for altitude, and these guys really push that boundary. I’ll be spending more time there as I prep for my 7000m this year @goliath.outdoor is a local sg outdoor brand building some really exciting stuff. I got to test their Stormshield Shell Jacket early on last year, and it’s been cool seeing how much they’ve grown since. We mighttt have something coming up together… we’ll see! @rab.equipment.sea is gear i really trust when things get tough. It’s not the cheapest, but when I’m out there and things get rough, I know this is the gear that will get me through snow and storms safely. Deuter (via @greenpasturesg) is one of the OG names in trekking. They’ve been releasing a lot of new bags recently, from ultralight expedition packs to packs that can take on crazy loads comfortably. I’ll be using the Deuter Expedition Ultra 60L for upcoming expeditions, my dream bag! @outsidesg has been one of our biggest supporters since really early on in our journey. There are a handful of outdoor gear outfitters in sg, but Outside has the biggest range from camping gadgets to mountaineering-level down jackets. Anything you’d need to be safe outdoors. I really appreciate all of you, thank you for continuing to support what we do! Let’s see where this next year takes us

It’s always the person that says they need a break from work. The next thing you know, they’re posting instagram stories from some mountain range in the middle of the mountains??? Who are we kidding, we’re that person hahah Escape to the mountains. Do really hard things that we wouldn’t even do in the city (I’m definitely not waking up at 4am to work) Not sure why. Not even sure if it’s actually rejuvenating for the body. But somehow, it always feels rejuvenating for the soul. Low-key… I think I might need a proper chill holiday soon too.

On the last day of the Krygyzstan exped, we hiked up to Lenin Peak base camp. We’re all going along, feeling good, enjoying the views… when one of the team members casually says, “This is too easy.” Three minutes later… boom. The sky opens up. Snowstorm? Frozen rain? Honestly, it felt like buckets being poured straight on us. Everything went from calm and scenic to a non-stop fast march back to camp. So note to future self: Don’t jinx it haha

Or you’re a masochist that likes the pain of the climb. Either way, welcome pal!

On expeditions, I honestly don’t know what some of the team members are up to. I’d step out to settle the next day’s plans with the guides… or, you know, take a quick poo… and come back to the most random things. This time? Grace and Pat, putting eyedrops over a bowl of mala. Blame it on the AMS

No stress, just head to the mountains with some friends

I’m not really sure how this started. What started off as a showcase of traditional Kyrgyz dances somehow turned into a mini dance party in the mountains. No internet, just good vibes, loud music, and some seriously breathless dance moves. I had to take MULTIPLE breaks between songs — dancing in the mountains is 1,000x harder than trekking, no joke.

Once upon a time, Grace kinda messed up her knee on one of the days. Going up was fine, but the swelling kicked in on the way down and every step started to hurt. So to help out, I carried her bag for the downhill segments. But girl’s gotta drink water somehow right hahah She wasn’t the only one struggling that day, just the only one we caught on camera. Still not sure why I didn’t put the bag down though…

As much as I love being in the mountains, it’s somehow always the people that make the journey more memorable. Alone, we could probably leave camp a bit earlier, climb segments a little quicker, and descend a lot faster. But like Barney Stinson said, “whatever you do in this life, it’s not legendary unless your friends are there to see it.” I’ve been lucky to meet some incredible people on these expeditions. And it feels like this is just the beginning of the adventure together.

With friends like these, you don’t need enemies. You’ll want to wait till the end to see what she’s reacting to. So... context. One of our team members got sunburned on her eyes (yup, that’s possible). Her eyes were sore and puffy, so we decided to help out the best way we knew how: by heading down to the nearest river to grab some cold glacier water for her to use as an ice pack to cool her eyes. Everything was going “normal”… until someone thought it’d be funny to pretend to pee in the river and show her the video. We let her use the cold pack for a bit before showing her the video. You should’ve seen her face hahah pure shock The reaction was priceless. But before anyone freaks out, it was a prank! We didn’t actually pee in the river. Don’t pee in rivers guys!

Not every emotion on a trek is “positive,” but they all matter. From the highs at the summit, the lows during the push, and everything in between. But the emotions I remember aren’t the big moments, but the small ones that happen between the climbs — a whiny break, a shared laugh, even the small snacks shared. Over the years, trekking’s taught me a lot about myself. It’s basically therapy, just with heavier breathing.
