I had the opportunity to be part of a workshop conducted by Gallery Onkaf for visual art/ design students from grade 12. The workshop was around Yayoi Kusuma’s practice and visual language of dots where participants created their own interpretations using found material and cloth remnants.

The presentation included Kusuma’s contribution to the fashion world and parallels were drawn between Ekatran’s and Kusuma’s practice.

There's something about walking through a gallery that I really enjoy - the experience changes as you move. At ONKAF Gallery, I found myself looking at the works from different distances and different angles.

Some details revealed themselves only when I came closer; others came together when I stepped back and looked at the work within the larger space.

I loved discovering the relationship between painting, artistic textiles and batik, and the recurring ideas of symbols, nature and the human form in the work of Polish artist Anna Krzemińska-Baoni. The more I looked, the more I noticed.

And perhaps that's one of my favourite things about art - you don't always have to understand everything immediately. Sometimes you just look, pause, question and let the work stay with you.

I also loved the conversation with Sharad Chauhan, who walked us through the exhibition - his perspective shifted how I was reading the work.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to visit the solo exhibition “I Belong to the Missing Side” by eminent performance and visual artist Inder Salim @salim.inder at ONKAF Gallery. Curated by Neha Zooni Tikku, the exhibition presents a compelling body of work comprising paintings, photographs, and installations, foregrounding Salim’s long-standing engagement of art & protest.

The exhibition unfolds as a powerful visual and conceptual narrative where personal histories intersect with political urgencies. Through layered imagery, performative residues, and evocative installations, Salim interrogates questions of belonging, displacement, and resistance, situating the body and the act of protest at the center of his artistic inquiry. Curator Neha Zooni Tikku brings together an arresting selection of works that collectively articulate the artist’s enduring commitment to exploring the fragile yet potent spaces between identity, dissent, and artistic expression.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to interact directly with the artist, who generously shared insights into the conceptual foundations of the exhibition. Each work was carefully discussed, allowing the students to engage more deeply with the narratives, symbolism, and processes embedded within Salim’s practice.

The exhibition offered viewers a profound encounter with an artist whose work persistently examines the politics of presence, absence, and the contested terrains of belonging.

Artist. Activist. Performer. Legend. Inder Salim is back. 💥

"I belong to the missing side" at Gallery ONKAF marks Salim’s first solo show in over three decades, tracing a defiant 35-year career. Known for his "body-centric" interventions—like the infamous moment he sacrificed a finger to the dying Yamuna—Salim’s art is a gash on the surface of the status quo.

The show features never-before-seen paintings from the 90s, mixed-media photo prints, and stunning installations that recontextualize Kashmiri heritage through a lens of displacement. It’s a dense, witty, and subversive exploration of geopolitical lines and personal history. Salim doesn't just show you an image; he dares you to cut across it. Don’t miss this rare glimpse into the mind of one of India’s most evocative radicals.

The exhibition will continue until 10th March 2026.

Gallery hours: 11:00 am – 7:00 pm (Sunday closed)

Venue: Gallery ONKAF, C-1/20, 3rd floor, Safdarjung Development Area, New Delhi – 110016
