Dave Gallagher began his fire service career when he listened to his Dad’s fire stories and stories about his grandfather who served in the days of the horses. He joined his local volunteer fire department in 1976 as a FF/PM after spending two years as a founding member of a Fire/Rescue Explorer Post in Montgomery County Ohio.

Soon after he was hired by the Fairborn, Ohio FD, where he spent a year, but then was hired by the Wayne Twp FD in 1979, which became the Huber Heights Fire Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1982, and during his time there served as a HazMat Technician and Training Officer.

His journey also saw him brought on as an instructor and advisory board member to FDIC and instructor for Firehouse Magazine in the mid-nineties. He traveled the country with some of the biggest names of the Fire Service and learned tremendously in their presence and has done his best to pass the lessons along.

In 2004 he was retired due to LODI, but continued to instruct with On Scene Training Associates and several other groups including working with Affordable Drill Towers. He moved to just outside of Worcester, Massachusetts, and began working at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in 2014. He also joined one of the elite firefighting training groups, the New England FOOLs chapter, where he is a Life Member, and had the honor to be an instructor for the Joey D Foundation conferences in NY and TX.

In 2020 he and his wife Sue moved to St Lucie County in Florida where he also helped out at several of the Treasure Coast FOOLs trainings.

He has been a featured speaker on podcasts and has written articles for Fire Service magazines.

When the sun is facing your throw, use it to your advantage. A lot of times a shadow will appear giving you a good idea whether your aerial is over the roof yet or now.

Unlike ground ladders, we can go as many rungs over the roof as we want. Being more than three to four rungs over gives us more aerial that will be visible in smoke, more aerial to quickly grab onto and also allows the light on the tip to go higher and shine down.

When positioning at top floor fires, ensure you position between windows vs over windows in the event that conditions deteriorate in that area. The same goes for windows that may be horizontal as your climbing, always monitor conditions in the area of your exit.

On Friday October 9th, we held the 2nd Fire On The Water lecture series at Old Colony Yacht Club. With over 40 attendees for the three presenters we were able to write a check for $1,875 to the Boston Fire Department Relief Fund which assists our members and windows in time of need. In addition we were able to take up a collection of $300 for the family of FF Andrew Brokes who was killed in the line of duty on October 8th in Durham, NC. Alarm Of Fire LLC has matched that donation and $600 has been mailed to Local 668.

A special thank you to the following people for making this happen!

Deputy Chief Shaffer
@capnpat10
@todd.leonard.52
@oldcolonyyc1891
@jintymcgrath
@officialenergydrink
@juliobump

As well as all of our attendees, thank you!

The Saturday Setup
⠀
It’s the little things that lead to success or failure. You have to own them both. Not just the wins.
⠀
This photo shows an aerial setup that worked fine despite not having even footing under the outrigger foot plate to distribute the weight. The operator still got the aerial up to this side and in position in good time. Everything worked out fine.
⠀
This will work 99 out of 100 times. The problem is the 1 time it doesn’t causes a failure of the foot plate or collar holding it on the cylinder and the apparatus drops 2”-3”. No biggie. But if the aerial is at max extension at a low angle it may be enough to cause a catastrophic failure of the aerial to say nothing of the crew who may be on it. This could have been avoided with slight adjustments on the approach and positioning. Discipline.
⠀
The mark of professionalism in our world is being prepared before the run, disciplined during the run and accountable after the run
⠀
Train to learn it. Drill to perfect it.
