🎨✨ Episode 5: Creating Mosaics - The Process

🎨 Episode 3: The Mosaics & Ceramics Process
In this this episode, we’re diving into the mosaics and ceramics that helped bring the community mural to life!

Piloto has a long history of working with mosaics and ceramics, and throughout this project, ARTSiE brought the community together through workshops to create the ceramic pieces that would eventually become part of the mural.

Each piece started with someone from the community creating, shaping, and adding their own touch. Seeing all of those individual pieces come together to become part of one larger mural was such a special part of the project.

Watch and listen to learn more about the process and the story behind how it all came together!

🎨 Episode 3: Mixing and matching colors to find the right hue
How do you know when a color is just right?
For mural artists Andrew and Piloto, it starts with an idea and a lot of experimenting. Andrew and Piloto worked from reference images to break those colors down into shades he could mix and bring to the wall.
Some colors started in the paint buckets. Others took a little more mixing and matching to get there.
In this episode, we’re taking a closer look at how Andrew and Piloto built a palette that could carry across the mural and bring its different themes together.
Swipe through to see how the colors came to life. 🖌️🎨

Instead of doing a process vid, I decided to switch up and show how many cans I used for the latest project with @open_studio_project .

“ONE FOR ALL”
Aerosol, latex paint, mosaic tiles
35’ x 46’
727 W Main St.
Evanston IL

This Evanston project was in collaboration with @open_studio_project , @fxwart , @edwigemassart , @yasuk0_design and myself which took over a year of planning. Though there a lot of weather stoppages and losing Dunkie causing a huge blow in the midst of working on this wall, this was one of the best projects that I’ve worked on as a muralist. I’m very blessed to work with a caring and hardworking team on this one and I look forward to work with them and Evanston on future projects.

I included a couple close people to emphasize the feeling of community and belonging that I hope people feel coming into Evanston (as well as greater Chicago) and finding their tribe. I hope that people find their people as they navigate anywhere they move to.

There will be a mural dedication this Saturday from 1-3 to see this piece in person.

Huge thanks to @leximakesyoulaugh and @tmayfld for helping us out as well as @itsme.jessv and @anthonykanemetz for modeling for this one.

Where are We Wednesday? We’re situated happily among a bunch of other Main Street businesses, commemorated in clay.

Clay clues, colorful pieces, and hundreds of community-made tiles… but where in Evanston will you find this mosaic? 👀

Think you know? Drop your guess below! ⬇️

🎨 Bonus clue: There’s a special dedication happening this Saturday, 9/26, from 1–4 PM at the mystery mural. Will you figure it out before then?

A very important “pop up” is now open at Sherman and Main. The city-owned site is planted with hearty winter rye to feed local birds during the cold months.
Thanks to @maindempstermile and @cityofevanston for seeing the value in helping our feathered friends.
Excited to see what pops up here next 🌻🌻🌻🌻
