POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The cold season always beckons the adventurer in us. From misty forest trails to rushing rivers, Karnataka along with the rest of India has a lot to offer. It's less about the adrenaline and more about being present.

My article in Deccan Herald Weekend today.

Thank you @solopassport @bengaluruprayana @openskycircles @nomadic.aquanaut for your interesting inputs.

Raksha Nagaraj grew up in Bangalore with dreams bigger than her city. On paper, her life was perfect: an engineering degree, a stable career as a Product Manager, and a clear path ahead. But deep inside, she felt restless. While others planned their weekends, Raksha planned her next adventure. She longed to see the world, to explore its hidden trails, and to dive into its vast oceans.

It wasn’t easy to leave a secure corporate career, but Raksha knew her heart was elsewhere. She took a leap of faith, embracing uncertainty and trusting her instincts. Traveling solo, especially as a woman, came with questions and doubts. “Is it safe? Why alone? How will you manage?” Each journey answered them. City by city, trek by trek, dive by dive, Raksha discovered courage, independence, and freedom she had never known.

Her love for travel became a calling. Solopassport was born to share her adventures and inspire others to take that first step. In Sydney, Let’s Travel Sydney captures the city’s charm, while back home, Bengaluru Prayana brings together a community exploring the culture, history, and art of Bangalore. Her passion for the ocean led to Open Sky Circles, uniting divers through shared wonder and humility beneath the waves.

Raksha’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Small beginnings, financial uncertainty, and repeated rejections tested her resolve. But every setback became a lesson, every “no” a redirection. She learned the power of persistence, faith, and showing up consistently.

Today, Raksha stands as a beacon for women everywhere. Her message is simple yet powerful: start small, trust yourself, and take that first step. The world is waiting, and courage, curiosity, and heart can turn dreams into extraordinary journeys.

ASSY PLATEAU 🇰🇿
A huge valley located at height of 2100-2800m above sea level, about 40km long. Around 100 Kms from Almaty city, makes for a good day trip.
The valley is a part of a National reserve, and is famous for its wildlife especially birds.
Another major attraction is the “Astronomical Observatory.” It is one of the biggest in Kazakhstan, the huge dome is seen from many points of the valley. The observatory is located on the Assy-Turgen plateau at a height of 2750 meters above sea level. It was build by Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute, and observations began to be performed since 1981.
The Plateau is also best known among locals for:
Hiking & Camping
Off-roading on Motorbikes
Nomadic Festival in July every year

KOLSAY LAKES 🇰🇿
🏔️Kolsay Lakes National Park is located on the north slope of the Tian Shan Mountains and the park boundary is around 150Kms from Almaty.
The main attraction of the park are the three Kolsay Lakes which are natural mountain reservoirs formed by landslides & tectonic movements across Kolsay River.
🗻Lower Kolsay Lake - It is a kilometer long, 400 meters wide, and 80 meters in depth. This lake is easily accessible by road and also had guesthouses & camps for stay.
🗻Middle Kolsay Lake - 5 Kms upstream from the lower lake, the middle lake is the largest of the three, and reaches a depth of 50 meters. It is also considered the most scenic.
🗻Upper Kolsay Lake - 6 Km above the middle lake, the upper lake is surrounded by spruce trees and alpine meadows & is close to the Kyrgyzstan border.

If you want to hike to all the three lakes, it would be 13 Kilometers walk in total & a full day trip from Almaty city.

🇰🇿 CHARYN CANYON [Шарын шатқалы]
Deemed as the mini Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan
It’s a gorgeous canyon on the Charyn River in Kazakhstan, located about 200 km east of Almaty, close to the Kazakh–Chinese border. It is approximately a 2.5 hours drive from Almaty city.
🏜️The Canyon itself is around 154 km in length & is part of the Charyn National Park.
🏜️ The entire canyon actually comprises of 5 different canyons: Valley of Castles, Temirlik Canyon, Yellow Canyon, Red Canyon and Bestamak Canyon.
🏜️One can choose to do both lower canyon and upper canyon hike or either based on the time on hand.
🏜️I chose to do only the lower canyon hike which is around 3 kms. It is mostly a flat walk and easy, except for the harsh sun. The lower hike is the Valley of Castles area.
🏜️ Start early to beat the heat and carry enough water and cover with caps, sunglasses
🏜️ The lower canyon hike ends at the Charyn river; however you are not allowed to swim in the river.
🏜️ After chilling by the river, one can choose to hike back to the starting point or opt for a ride back in one of the Soviet Era vans at a reasonable cost.
🏜️As you walk through the path, the colors of the canyon and the sky keeps changing and you feel like clicking pictures at every step! One also feels so insignificant in front of those gigantic colourful rock formations.
🏜️ If you opt to do both upper and lower canyon hikes, it will be a full day trip from Almaty.
