extremely bittersweet time of year 🥹🩵

This is one of the most bittersweet feelings i’ve felt. I never thought the last bus ride, the last match, the last hole, or the last putt would come. This sport has truly made me into who I am. I am so thankful for coach sam, coach jackie, coach grace, cojo, and ms sandi for giving me the love I have for golf. I have made the sweetest friends and have had some of my proudest moments on the golf course. Thank you to my mom and dad for showing up for me over and over. I can count on one hand how many matches you’ve missed out of the hundreds i’ve played in. I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store as I continue this sport throughout college! Finally, the biggest thank you to my sweet grandeddy. From our endless rounds of golf to the phone calls after my matches, all of this was for you! I love you and miss you!!

February 2, 2016. This is one of our very first Operation 36 trainings. 📸

Maggie Simons, Marc Lapointe, Chris Speaker, Darren Falk, and Andrew Kiger flew and drove in from around the country to spend two days with Matt Reagan, Michael Brooks, and me. Nobody made them come. There was no guarantee this new idea would work. They showed up because they had a burning curiosity to get better as coaches.

Ten years later, every one of them is wildly successful. Maggie is now an Op36 ambassador leading coaching summits of her own. Marc runs a very successful Academy at multiple locations just south of Charlotte. Andrew has an Academy in Holly Springs and Cary. Darren is thriving in coaching in the Northeast and Chris has ran successful academies in Virginia over the years.

Naval says we live in the age of Alexandria: almost every book and every piece of knowledge is a fingertip away. The information was never the hard part. The hunger is.

That’s what I see when I look at this picture. Not the most experienced coaches in the room, but the most curious.

Coaches, find your hunger. Read what lights you up, go to the training, and take the trip.
Players, the same goes for you. The ones who want to learn always pass the ones who just show up.

Parents, model it. Let your kids see you reading and learning something new.

To this original crew: thank you for believing early. 🙏

📼Throwback to 2012: clipboard, tennis shoes, a drink in hand, watching one of our early Operation 36 groups on the range. We were about a year into this thing, and I can promise you I didn’t feel confident about where it was going. 😄

Yesterday, I talked about why we should stop yelling “be confident!” at players. Confidence is a feeling. It rises and falls with results. Self-belief is built on proof.

Today, I want to add one more idea. In an interview with Debbie Millman, author Dani Shapiro said she thinks confidence is overrated, and that courage matters more.

Courage means taking a step toward what you want no matter how you feel about yourself, your chances, or the outcome. You don’t wait for confidence to show up. You go first.

And here’s the best part: confidence usually follows. The more you practice something and see repeated success, the more confident you become. Courage comes first. Confidence is the reward.

Players, don’t wait until you feel ready to sign up for that tournament.

Parents, praise the courage to try, not just the result.

Coaches, build players who take the step, then help them stack up the proof.

Looking at this 2012 picture, that’s exactly what we did. We didn’t wait to feel confident. We just kept showing up.

It’s hard. That’s the point. Hard wins change us.

The juniors mentioned that my older brother @tommyhinesgolfacadamy said “what’s with the tap tap”. I saw a great opportunity to show him what’s it’s all about. Holding that finish 🏌🏽‍♀️hilarious 😂😂😂

Failure isn’t sometimes part of the process. It always is.

What’s your favorite failure?

Mine came in eighth grade, when I got cut from the high school hockey team. It crushed me, but it also lit a fire, and I went to work harder than I ever had.

That’s why I love this picture of Logan Atkins and me from 2016. Logan was one of the hardest-working players I’ve ever had the chance to coach. He didn’t always get the result he wanted, but he just wouldn’t give up. He kept trying and showing up. Trying and showing up. And that built a player good enough to compete at an extremely high level in high school and go on to play college golf.

The 🇫🇮 Finns have a word for it: sisu. It means the mental strength to keep trying even after you feel like you’ve reached the limits of your abilities. Logan had it.

Players, the missed putt, the round that got away, the level you’ve failed 20 times? That’s not the end of your story. It’s the part that builds you.

Parents, let your kids struggle a little. That’s where sisu is born.

Coaches, help your players see failure as an event, not an identity.

When you feel you can’t go on, know that you’re just getting started.

👇 Drop your favorite failure in the comments.

It’s hard. That’s the point. Hard wins change us.

Until next time, PGA of Alberta 🇨🇦⛳

Huge thanks to the PGA of Alberta for having us as a vendor partner at this year’s Buying Show, and as a presenting sponsor of the Awards Cocktail Reception 🥂

Robert, Michelle, Brendan, Marlene, Amy, Jenn and Thomas, thank you for a seamlessly run event 🙌

A few takeaways:
🤝 Face-to-face business still matters. Nothing beats being in the room.
🔥 To our customers: without your trust, we couldn’t hold a candle in the wind. Thankfully, our flame burns strong in Alberta. Thanks for the great feedback and the honest suggestions. Keep them coming.
👋 To everyone new I met: growing the network is what it’s all about.
🏆 Congrats to all the award winners and nominees. A well-deserved celebration of the pros who make this game great.

Our promise stays the same: building tools that make the golf pro’s life easier and the game more enjoyable for everyone.

See you next year, Alberta 👊

Yeah, I was debating if I should let my brother know I’m gonna post this or not and ask for forgiveness after but being the good younger sister I sent him the video to get his permission to post it now he wants to patent it. The story behind Tommy tap tap is these kids told me Coach Tommy said what’s up with the tap tap and Tommy tap tap was born.
