💜 Was bleibt?

Inclusive design starts here with light, choice, community.

This 10,000 m² workshop was designed for 120 people with disabilities—but the architecture goes far beyond simply meeting accessibility requirements.
Three courtyards—a triangle, square, and circle—bring daylight deep into the 50-metre floorplate while making the building easier to understand, navigate, and inhabit.

Visual connections between workshops encourage awareness of one another. Circular windows open glimpses into different activities. A compact circulation loop, communal heart, and roof terrace create opportunities to meet beyond the workplace itself.

Even the industrial material palette—concrete, steel, timber, and translucent polycarbonate—is balanced by light, landscape, colour, and places to pause.

The most important move here is simple:
inclusion isn’t treated as an added feature. It shapes the architecture from the beginning.

A workplace on a tree: the Baumhaus Office of Benedikt Hartl

What happens when the cost of space becomes more important than the space itself? In Weimar, Opposite Office (@oppositeoffice) answers with a one-square-metre treehouse, the Baumhaus Office, turning the office into a compact experiment against oversized headquarters and speculative real estate.

Hardware-store spruce, aluminium cladding, two ratchet straps. Dome into the canopy.

How much space does an architecture practice actually need?

@oppositeoffice

To dodge Munich’s soaring office rents, German architecture studio @oppositeoffice has proposed a radical and compact solution: a treehouse office.

Measuring just one square metre, the Baumhaus Office micro-workspace is anchored to a tree on the campus of @bauhaus_uni in Weimar. The structure is designed to accommodate up to three architects, featuring a fold-down desk, shelving, a domed skylight framing the canopy above and a ladder for access.

Built from off-the-shelf spruce timber and aluminium-clad plywood, it is secured to the tree using two simple ratchet straps over protective matting, allowing it to be easily demounted and reinstalled elsewhere.

Part architectural design, part commentary on modern real estate pressure, the project was made possible through a mix of academic backing, structural engineering, and cultural advocacy.

Could a one-square-metre treehouse be the most reasonable workspace for the future?
