ETP killer whales in perfect conditions! 🤯🙏🔥⚡️ We encountered this unknown young killer whale with heavy markings along its side cruising through perfectly glassy offshore waters. The rest of its pod was scattered across the area before it suddenly linked back up with them and the group continued traveling as a unit.

We were on a strike mission offshore searching for anything when suddenly these killer whales popped up. Nothing beats finding Mexican killer whales in blue glassy calm water with no other boats around! You never know what you are going to find offshore and that is part of what makes these encounters so special 🫡

The feast after a successful hunt. The last moments of a Brydes Whale and nutritious meal for a pod of Orcas.
This is still one of the craziest predations I have witnessed and I am still blown away by the strategy and dedication that went into taking down a 20 ton whale just to feed on its Nutritious tongue.

The whale never stood a chance and within 10 minutes it was bleeding out and too weak to fend off or escape.

An apex predator doesn’t usually change its course for a human.

When we encounter orcas underwater and they are coming toward us, we are normally the ones who move aside and give them space.

But this time, there wasn’t much room to do that.

It was a large, closely bonded family. As they started to spread out, I found myself right in their path. I didn’t want to move closer or get in their way, so the best thing I could do was stay still and let them decide where to pass.

And then this happened:

a family of orcas passing just inches from me, completely on their own terms. #orcas #killerwhale

A core memory unlocked for @roamtobewild 🌊🫍

Whether we like it or not, entering the water with these intelligent and magical cetaceans is an intrusion into their world. Yet, being accepted and interacted with so gently on every occasion left me completely humbled. 🥹 To experience a connection that supersedes anything I’ve ever known, and to be welcomed so openly by these wise souls, is a gift I will never take for granted. 🐋✨

Grateful for these moments and the feeling of my heart melting 🫠

Do you see the baby orca turn to look at the boat at the end?

Drone photography of a mother orca and baby orca swimming through the ocean. This was my first time droning orcas and they really move fast once they get going so I was happy I was able to keep up at times to get these shots. The bond between mom and baby orcas is so nice to watch even from above.
