American Hemp Farmer is officially out on PBS!
This one goes back a lot farther than today’s release. It started right before lockdown, recording Doug Fine’s audiobook of the same name at @fatcrates. Then the world shut down, and we had to figure out how to work around that just to finish the first project.
Not long after, Doug called me and asked me to edit the first version of American Hemp Farmer. New Mexico was home base for both of us, and even though I was working in LA at the time, this film felt close to home from the start. I said yes, and completely underestimated the scope, but delivering that first version gave me a confidence I didn’t have before.
Through all the revisions, deadlines, family emergencies, health scares, loss, and long conversations, Doug and I built a real working friendship that helped carry this project forward. Our families even officially met at the Santa Fe Film Festival, which made the whole thing mean even more.
This film also carried me through a lot of growth, from moving from Premiere to Resolve mid-process, to stepping into my first film festival, to getting clearer on the kind of career path I wanted to build.
My dad used to put PBS and NOVA on for us growing up, so seeing something I’ve worked on this closely now living on PBS feels like more than full circle.
Proud of this one.
Thank you for trusting me with @organiccowboy !

One of the things we love about American Hemp Farmer is how Doug Fine mixes history, humor, and positivity at the future of farming.

At one point in the film, Doug travels to George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate to learn traditional hemp harvesting methods by hand-cutting hemp with a very sharp scythe while dressed in Colonial-style hemp clothing. It’s a fun reminder that hemp has deep roots in American agriculture.

Throughout the film, Doug shares what he’s learned about regenerative hemp farming. His message is powerful: hemp has the potential to help strengthen our soil, support farmers, and build a more resilient future for agriculture.

Be sure to watch the film on March 14th on PBS.org for free and on the PBS passport streaming app (also free)!

Next week is a big week! 🌱

AMERICAN HEMP FARMER will be available starting March 14 on public television stations across the country and for anyone to stream on the PBS App and PBS.org.

The film was directed by our dear friend Doug Fine and is based on his best-selling book of the same name. In the documentary, Doug travels to meet hemp experts in Oregon and Vermont and also plants organic hemp with a Tribal farm enterprise on Rosebud Sioux land—something we were grateful to be part of with him.

We’ll be sharing more about the film throughout the week. In the meantime, mark your calendars for March 14!

Hemp Is The Hope Of The World

@steve.deangelo and I created this video to show how embracing hemp could play a powerful role in building a more sustainable future. We’re facing a global crisis — microplastics are everywhere, forests are disappearing at an alarming pace, and climate change continues to intensify.

Nearly everything produced from trees, cotton, and petroleum has a hemp based alternative. Take a moment to consider that. Hemp not only matches — and often exceeds — the performance of these materials, but it’s also regenerative, reducing our dependence on extractive practices that deplete natural resources. Hemp captures significant amounts of carbon dioxide while helping restore and revitalize soil. Yet when profit is prioritized over long term thinking, these realities are too often overlooked.

I’m committed to advancing the hemp industry here in Mexico and helping support the transition toward a new green economy. I added Spanish subtitles to this video to better inform and engage the communities in Mexico who I am collaborating with and who are supporting me in this mission. I’m witnessing stigma and attitudes shifting in Mexico—giving me hope for a brighter future.

Our Director is over the moon, as the AMERICAN HEMP FARMER film has won its second award. Here’s what Doug Fine (@organiccowboy) had to say today:
"Oh man, I realize that being a filmmaker who gets to see his film screen in a full theater, now for the third time, is a tremendous blessing in itself (you can hear folks laughing in the right places!). And then…thanks beyond words to everyone who voted to make AMERICAN HEMP FARMER the Audience Choice winner at this weekend’s Silver City Film Festival! So many remarkable films screened at this simply wonderful festival, and my family and I (I was sporting hemp shirt, pants and [TMI alert] underwear) were blown away to screen this ode to regenerative living at a century-old art deco theater. And y’all voted, obviously, which means so much, not just at a screening in our home state of New Mexico, but also because it was the first screening of our film’s final cut. You can keep track of the film’s progress and find my books and journalism from five continents, plus book me as a speaker at DougFine.com. Here’s to a regenerative future with fewer extreme wildfires and floods and whatnot."

Day Two of Hemping! Had an issue with one of the mixers (to be expected on the job site to have something to work through) but we are on track and have a good flow with a great team. Hemping, like homesteading, is better together than solo. That’s what we are all about here at @havenvillagetn 🤠 we realize we need each other more than ever to be prepared for the times ahead. #tradeschool #healthyhemphomes #hemp #hempers #hemphomes #tennessee #togetherisbetter #teamwork #homestead #homesteading #havenvillage
