Last Saturday, we celebrated a journey that means so much more to us than a number.

Five years of learning, growing, evolving and, most importantly, building a community rooted in trust, care and genuine connection.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of sitting around a table with some of the brightest voices in the beauty industry in Port Harcourt for a roundtable brunch with TAD Beauty Africa @tadbeautyafrica .

Makeup artists. Beauty creators. Aestheticians. Hairstylists. Cosmetologists. Beauty founders. Different professions, different perspectives, but one shared interest: the growth of the African beauty industry.

And it wasn’t one of those conversations where everyone simply nodded in agreement. 😅

We talked about the biases between Nigerian and foreign beauty brands, the limitations within our industry, formulation and product development, and the realities of running a beauty business in Nigeria.

We talked about funding or the lack of it. Inflation. Exchange rates. Policy shocks. And how all of these eventually find their way into the price of the beauty products consumers buy.

We challenged the idea that expensive automatically means better. In beauty, price alone doesn’t determine quality. Formulation, ingredients, performance, manufacturing and the science behind a product matter.

We also had a very important conversation about inclusion beyond the usual geographical hubs.

Why do major beauty campaigns, events and opportunities so often happen in the same places, with the same faces? What happens to the incredible talent building from other parts of Nigeria? And what would it look like to intentionally create room for them at the table?

I also got to share my thoughts on the beauty business mindset turning passion into profit and what it really takes to build sustainably in this industry.

But perhaps my favourite part was the honesty.

We ate. We drank. We shared. We challenged. We listened. We gave.

How do we build a better, more inclusive and more sustainable African beauty industry—and what role does each of us play in making that happen?

There is so much more to talk about. And I’m glad we started here.

Sometimes you’re so busy building the vision that you forget to stop and look at how far you’ve come.

From the very first day… the small beginnings, the uncertainty, the lessons, the mistakes, the little wins, the moments we questioned ourselves, and the moments we knew we were exactly where we were meant to be.

It has always been about people.
