Lo-fi Sick Woman Odyssey is a 2021 work by Charlie Fitz @charliejlfitz about living and working from a bed in a sick body that cannot adhere to conventional schedules or routines, whether that be a workday or a regular sleep cycle. Charlie was influenced by the lo-fi girl animation popular on YouTube of a girl working at her desk, almost continuously, soundtracked by a 24/7 livestream of lo-fi music.

Created with a lo-fi, collage aesthetic, using photos of herself from the various beds and bedrooms she has worked from since being ill, Charlie’s film engages with crip time, showing the unconventional hours she often keeps, working as and when she feels well enough to do so.

The film has a surreal, dreamlike backdrop, illustrating the strangeness that can result from living and working in the same, small space, with no differentiation between resting time and working time.

Come and catch it at @198_cal until 5pm THIS Sunday🚨!

In May 2020 my partner @oscarvinter & I collaborated with @AbleZine on the newsletter 'Care in the Time of Crisis'. We had a photo essay included in the newsletter which demonstrated a method I term the assisted-self portrait.

I frequently use my art to explore self-representations to reclaim my narrative and rebuild a subjectivity fragmented by the objectification of western biomedicine and patriarchal culture.

The assisted self-portrait is the vision of the individual being represented brought into being by the assistance of another. It aims to honour human fragility, interdependence and mutual care.

I have used this technique in three distinct ways. The first is by creating an image together in the moment with another person. Another is with the other person's permission, I recontextualize photos they have previously taken of me into collages. And the final way I have used this process is through audio visual collaboration.

This method grew organically between Oscar Vinter & I, as a disabled partnership we are interdependent. This method not only honours mutual care but aims to resist silencing and narrative colonization, as it allows the subject to think about how we want to be represented and to often express this to someone else.

The three images posted here examples of the first type of assisted-self portrait and are from that photo story in the newsletter. I have more examples of this method of working on my website - www.sickofbeingpatient.com

Image descriptions in comments. Centre frame is the backside of Charlie, a white woman in her 20s. Their back is to the camera, their hands either side of their waist. In frame are their hips, bottom and the top of their legs, with their hands and forearms hanging either side. They wear white, single use adult incontinence pants with the words: 'unlearning shame, bowel incontinence is my normal' sewn into the back in different coloured thread. This writing is repeated in a black cursive font layered digitally on the image on the left hand side of the frame with an additional line reading: 'And that's okay'.

This week, we'll be revealing our #PoutFree competition winners, nominated for their inspirational stories over the last year. Our winners took part in a confidence-boosting photoshoot, shot by @alex_cameron, with @charlihoward and Colgate Max White Ultimate toothpaste on set to help them show off their unique smiles with pride in front of the camera.

Our first winning duo is @oscarvinter and @charliejlfitz. Oscar nominated Charlie for her unwavering positivity, despite a year of challenges. In spite of her struggles, Charlie creates beautiful art to raise awareness of her experiences with illness and disability, whilst also supporting others who are chronically ill and advocating for greater equality for the disabled community.

Charlie and Oscar's #PoutFreePortraits showcase having the confidence to be proud of who you are. They embody having the confidence to feel empowered to speak up about the hardships they have faced, and how they smile through any challenges.

Come back tomorrow to see our next winner!

"Capitalist societies view illness as opposed to living, as an interruption in life. Illness for many is integral to their experience of life. I am sick. I will always be sick."
