Where do the boundaries of the Earth end? What is the agency of gravity? Who is the environment and what is the astronaut and the cosmonaut, where ground is no longer grounding? Can we differentiate the background from the subject? What ethics would and should emerge within a world that possesses ever-expanding boundaries towards micro-gravitational environments?

Produced during Hospitalfield’s Flexible Residency, “Terra Nullius” is a collection of five headpieces speculating on terraforming and Earth’s extending limits, which inevitably yield itself to resource exploitation, from ocean trenches to the asteroid belt. In these headpieces, I am delving into the ethics of space exploration with a touch of sense of humour; addressing the “alterity” and the “creatureliness” of the planet, drawing from Gayatri Spivak’s influential and evolving work ‘Planetarity’ and Rachel Hill’s inspiring presentation on ‘Cosmoplanetarity’, at the Strelka Institute.

I have come to the end of my residency and I will be sleeping at this grand house for one final night. I feel emotional and attached. This has been a very productive time of my life and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in this project. The most special thanks go to the Hospitalfield team and Anna McLauchlan who were beyond supportive all throughout this period.

A beautiful shoot with @ionadavie on one of our favourite Hebridean beaches. Top to toe this outfit was made specially to go with Alice’s Hirta Hat Set from the Queen of the Waves Collection, and the background of the beach itself. The blouse is made in fabric designed by Jade @towzie_tyke_photography and the underskirt is made in cotton from @bawntextiles with an overskirt made in Harris Tweed from @adabrock_weaving_company . The blouse and skirts were designed by Jade, and the amazing boots were designed and made by sculptor Deniz @otherscapes.studio

‘Dust and Entanglements Beneath the Skin’ (2023) is the enmeshment of three socially-engaged projects I collaboratively produced in Ireland, South Korea and UAE, titled ‘The Spine That Binds Us Together’ (2014), ‘Turgen Culture and Heritage’ (2013) and ‘Beyond is Before’ (2013). This ‘parent’ installation forms part of @timeislove2023 exhibition at the Kethuda Husrev Hammam, curated by @benaysegulsonmez.

The manuscript displayed within the glass-cased shipping crate is ‘The Spine That Binds Us Together’. This atlas, whose contents you can view digitally on a tablet, is a series of individual stories, each told by someone with a relation to the sea - whether dock worker, sailor or explorer, whose personal accounts are presented as illustrative coastlines. These pages depict the understated significance of individual marks on history, utilising the primal methodology of place described through oral narration, thus disregarding the canonical stature of official maps as established institutions.

As the beach sand fuses into construction sand, the cartographic accounts of my manuscript articulates itself to the hand-drawn maps of Istanbul and Seoul’s overlapping city walls. Featured in this middle section is Türgen Culture and Heritage, a makeshift museum for a fictitious community previously hosted within my studio at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon. A documentary video (achieved through fictional interviews with the labourers of the art space), displays of national flags, historical artefacts, and hand-drawn maps demonstrated the culture and migration trails of the community during a 400-year period.

At the third section of my installation the construction sand cleaves to the desert sand; where the references of displacement and manual labour of the neighbouring projects consolidate into a body of multiple renditions. Partially buried here is Beyond is Before: the story of a sole survivor traveling with his pet kitten, envisioned in a post-apocalyptic future. Under the span of a pylon a wooden chest is discovered, capable of regressing any object placed within into its raw material, evoking a factory processing contrariwise.

The first design from the St Kilda project is now up on our website. The Sulaire Spencer (designed by Alice) is one of the garments from the traveling kist of The Queen of the Waves, who represents the spirit of a young woman of St Kilda. This tiny archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is her whole world, but one day she must leave along with the rest of her community, knowing she will never return. The Queen of the Waves collection comprises the imaginary contents of her travelling kist, garments she would have made to incorporate treasured aspects and memories of her old world as she embarked on her new life. This collection will arrive piece by piece over the coming months. It's designed so that each piece can be worn separately or layered together. If you choose to make her entire collection you will find that there are challenges and new things to learn, encompassing knitting, weaving, embroidery and felting. I felt utterly flattered, lucky and grateful to be invited by the marvellous composer and artist @mo.jango , to take part in this moving @ensemble_songwriting project! Taking our inspiration from Roger Robinson’s powerful poem, “Portable Paradise” , we have created our own portable paradises within preloved matchboxes, with materials we collected from the birch woodland and raised peat bog at Lenzie Moss. We then installed miniature assemblages with these elements to tell our stories and poetry with. These narratives will eventually turn into songs to challenge the climate anxiety in the hearts and thoughts of the young people who authored them, to inspire others. Loved every minute of working with these beautiful people.

Next in the row, is a mini reel for 69 (2012). In this film, a solitary shaman-like figure performs a cycle of actions, which seem to produce power for the wind turbines that surround her. After incubating, then breaking the eggs she lays, sacrificial offerings, salt -as fuel- and eventually the ethereal presence of wind appear.

I congratulate myself for first learning, then composing the jews-harp piece for the film’s soundtrack. The film’s prop, the Egg Washing Machine, was built collaboratively by Tom Harrup and I.

For facilitating the use of their space, special thanks to Whitelee Wind Farm - the largest on-shore wind farm in the UK and second largest in Europe.
