The legend returns to Tubby’s for his final Hudson Valley show of 2026!

Juma Sultan has a 60-plus year history as a musician, composer, archivist, activist, and educator. His band, Aboriginal Music Society, has been an evolving collective of musicians for over 50 years, playing a unique, ever-changing, genre-morphing style of music. The current iteration of the band continues exploring spirit grounded in sound, playing Juma’s original compositions, most of which have not yet been released on record.

Party of the week!

Living Language is a Brooklyn-based group led by Nikhil P. Yerawadekar (Antibalas, Hailu Mergia, Say She She), bringing the architecture and pan-African dialect of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat music to today’s dance floors and listening rooms. The members of Living Language have worked closely with icons such as Tony Allen, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Charles Bradley, and David Byrne, and the free expression within the band’s hypnotic music reveals a connection to our common roots, inviting audiences into the spirit of liberation and resistance that is synonymous with Afrobeat.

To celebrate Fela Kuti’s 88th birthday in the Hudson Valley, the sextet will be doubled in size by aligned musical guests from the area for some special large-ensemble performances from the legend’s catalog.

With Freakout / Busquelo keeping the party raging

A duo ensemble born from a childhood friendship in the midwest, Joe Westerlund and Trever Hagen have merged their solo work on drums and trumpet into a distinct sound world of melodic, rhythmic and lush electroacoustic texture. The pair pays respect to this instrumentation’s historical context, while reaching further into sonic geographies with their shared voice.

Kicking it off is a deep HV trio with Ged, Michael, and Otto!

Big week for lovers of free events!
HEADS UP @elbrekkie will be open every morning, but only Friday night (7:30-11) since we are closed on Saturday.

Tuesday we play chess and watch soccer.

Wednesday Philadelphia’s Greg Mendez plays a kind of lofi folky bedroom mix. Scarlet Rae will kick it off and she does a kind of slowcore shoegaze acoustic thing. This one is low on tickets, and available from @impactconcerts Seems like a strong likelihood of a sellout preshow?

Thursday is the highlight of the week with an epic free show celebrating the release of a new record by M. Geddes Gengras. His band (the per diem players) is a list of long time tubby’s regulars... Ben Seretan, Jared Ashdown, John Thayer, Nick Malkin & Otto Hauser.

Opening set from Shemesh/Tampasis. A Hudson Valley-based duo project featuring Omer Shemesh on oud + keyboards, and Adriana Tampasis on flute. The duo’s compositions blur the lines between composition and improvisation, utilizing narrative score and open structure, as well as extended technique. FREE, but RSVP is most welcome.

Friday more soccer and burritos!

Saturday we are closed.

*The background picture I used is a weaving I made at an intro to weaving class I took this past weekend at our new neighbors studio. Wanted to shoutout @catskill_weaving_school I had a wonderful experience and will happily blab to you about it if you ask. Welcome to the neighborhood! Have a great week. Peace.

WASTE MGMT RADIO HOUR ep 5 airs Tuesday June 23rd on KPBJ 95.9 FM and streams at KPBJ.FM 8-10 (am AND pm) featuring a VERY SPECIAL GUEST, my brother M. Geddes Gengras. Ged (as his friends call him) drops in to talk about his excellent new record “Guest List” out on Hausu Mountain Friday June 26th. We discuss the origins of the record and the extensive “guest list” of amazing collaborators that appear on it. We then blast through an incredible playlist of music made up entirely by those featured on the record. DO NOT MISS. But if you do, all episodes of the WASTE MANAGEMENT RADIO HOUR are archived at KPBJ.FM.
Support independent, ad free, free thinking, non conforming artistic endeavors before the hell of modern life eats us all alive.

Slow Fawn Studio celebrates five years of open doors to an ever expanding community. I am so grateful and amazed that new friends and old continue to make the journey to work here together. Thank you for allowing me to fill my life and this space with music! (If we worked together in another studio, I love you too!)
It’s been an exercise in learning and relearning, revising the space and myself to make better experiences and better records. I’m forever grateful that I get to do this every day!

Soon ... Currituck Co returns after over 15 years and Nervous Wreck Kids returns after almost 30 years with new music... Produced by @fruit_bats and featuring @annienerd and @ottohauserdrums, mixed by @minerstreetrecordings, coming to a Bandcamp near you as soon as we can sort out a mild glitch in the test pressing that I'm being a QC Karen about (not the fault of @smashedplastic , whose pressing sounds phenomenal!)

M. Geddes Gengras - “Motore”

the 2nd single from the album 𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙩 - coming out on June 26th on LP, CD, digitally, and various merch options w/ DL codes.

@m_geddes weaves an ecstatic electro-acoustic web of synth arpeggios, sax cascades (from @kingkroba), cello swells (from @kirinmcelwain), & guitar loops (from @muchgrey of Body Meπa) around a thrilling drum take from @ottohauserdrums .

𝗠. 𝗚𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀 returns to Hausu Mountain with 𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙩, his fourth entry in the label’s catalog since 2019 and the first to be issued on vinyl. His albums for HausMo have ranged from the topographical ambient synth networks of 𝘐 𝘈𝘮 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘮-𝘏𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥, to the dense technoid beat experiments of 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯, to the lush post-rock-adjacent harmonic architectures of 𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥, 𝘐 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦.

On 𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙇𝙞𝙨𝙩, Gengras composes the most ambitious and omnidirectional song cycle that he has ever captured in the context of one album, weaving his own synths and electronics into a dense tapestry of contrasting genres and ideas all animated by the presence of an enormous cast of collaborators. In Gengras’s hands, the infinite-limbed drum performances of 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝘅, the ecstatic guitar explorations of 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗻𝘆 (𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲), the soaring vocalizations of 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀), and the contributions of many more artists become individual brushstrokes to paint across the canvases of his dense mixes. Channeling sonic details from his wide circle of friends, Gengras broadens his range of expression and composes the most communal and ultimately personal program of music in his bottomless catalog.
