SYDNEY’S PINK BUSES ARE FINALLY NEARING THE FINISH LINE. 🚇

For thousands of people in Sydney’s south-west, this announcement has been a long time coming.

The Southwest Metro opens next Friday, 30 October, with the first services starting at 4:31 am.

Since September 2024, the old T3 Bankstown railway line has been closed for conversion into a modern metro. Workers, students, parents and local businesses have had to adjust their routines around replacement buses, longer journeys and a lot of waiting.

The original plan was to complete the conversion in about 12 months. The project proved more complex than expected, with technical challenges and industrial action contributing to delays.

Now, the wait is almost over.

🚇 Bankstown to Central: around 28 minutes.
🚇 Marrickville to Gadigal: around 12 minutes.
🚇 Lakemba to Victoria Cross: around 37 minutes.
🚇 Trains every four minutes during weekday peak periods.

The new line will connect Bankstown and the south-west through the CBD to Sydney’s north-west, opening up better connections to work, education and other parts of our city.

Credit is due to the engineers, construction teams, rail workers, transport staff and safety regulators whose work has brought this complex conversion to its opening date. The NSW Government has confirmed the date, following the final safety approval.

And spare a thought for the commuters who have kept catching those pink buses throughout the disruption. They have had to live with the inconvenience, day after day.

One important detail: the replacement buses will continue operating on opening day and throughout the first weekend to help people transition to the new service.

The opening is a milestone worth celebrating. The delays and disruption deserve an honest acknowledgement, too.

South-west Sydney, your turn to board is nearly here.

If you have relied on the replacement buses, what difference do you expect the new Metro to make to your daily commute?

Share this with someone who has been counting down to this day.
