@chrismetcalfemusic - Espalmador

Ibiza’s hidden gem inspires a triumphant return

INTRODUCTION:
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Trance visionary Chris Metcalfe began his musical career as a member of the British hard rock group "The Meteors" before transitioning to electronic dance music. This background gives his productions a distinctive edge, combining the raw energy of rock with sophisticated Trance sounds. Chris released several albums, including the critically acclaimed "The Journey" in 2009, which showcased his evolution. Beyond the studio, Metcalfe built a loyal following through long-term residencies at renowned venues like Zero Gravity and Five Palm.

Chris' name has become synonymous with quality trance, having signed with some of the industry's top labels including Monster Tunes, FSOE, Subculture, and Black Hole Recordings. He now returns to ASOT with this latest tune, something we like to call “1990s euphoria”!

PRODUCTION:
Named after an unspoiled island nestled between Ibiza and Formentera, the track generates its energy with an atmospheric introduction. A subtle, rolling kick drum is drenched in reverb and granular texture, incorporating the classic trance "wobble" effect. The percussion section is crafted in a heartfelt, ascending harmonic progression that complements the kick well. The compression, pattern, and sound design details are prominent.
Underneath it all, there's a warm, rounded bassline in a major key to maximize euphoria. As the climax erupts, a classic acid modulation sweeps through the mix, providing more rhythm and energy. Metcalfe layers multiple elements, including classic trance "hoover" sounds, as he nails the 90s trance vibe.

CONCLUSION:
"Espalmador” is a thrilling homecoming after a 7-year absence! It's a combination of classic elements like pads, synths, and rolling bass inside a modern production for a fresh edge. We can’t wait to hear what else he has in store.

...Benno: "What? Is that even a question?"
Piet: "Nonsense! Of course we exist!"

Well...Their faces says it all 😄!!

We are pretty much sure they still exist, saw and met Piet this March in Hungary at his gig and last Saturday he played in Poland, they did wonderful remix of Aly & Fila's w JES "Sunrise" last year - and not to mention another epic collaboration with Armin on "The Greater Light To Rule The Night" two years ago! Last year they remastered Symsonic for 20 years celebration and released it on streaming services and vinyl for the first time, released merch and refurbished old website Rank-1 Dotcom. We all saw with our own eyes Benno making ASOT Anthem 2024 together with Armin, Ferry and Ruben, and heard Armin in the last ASOT episode saying loud and clear artist credits for the anthem: "Ferry Corsten, Rank 1, Ruben de Ronde and myself Armin van Buuren!"

But for everybody who was still wondering about it, two days ago (27.6.23) Benno gave an interview to the radio show "Barend & Benner" on @npo3fm which asks the weekly question "Band, where are you?" so here's what Benno said - actually - confirmed for all non-believers 😎:

Presenter: The big question "Do you still exist, wee band?", in this case "Rank 1, do you still exist??"

Benno: Well, actually we do!

Presenter: That's great!

Benno: I say "actually" because we haven't released that much anymore in recent times. Piet still spins every now and then but... Coincidentially, last week Armin, Ferry, Ruben de Ronde and I did something really cool together and made the A State Of Trance Anthem for 2024 which will take place in the Ahoy... And that will once again feature the name "Rank 1"!

You can read the full interview with Benno on rank1fanblog.blogspot.com and find out about Rank 1 past, Benno's producing with Armin, why Benno doesn't DJ, and more!

In 2002 @rank1official were interviewed by @ivibesmagazine about their famous performance at @tranceenergy the same year in Jaarbeurs, Utrecht, which was part of their album Symsonic as a DVD and has been recently remastered and uploaded on Spotify (+ other streaming services). Here's what they said:

Did you enjoy the live performance?

R1: For us it was the best ever!

How long did you prepare before you actually decided, OK, now we are ready for the live show?

R1: This one took 1.5 months, because we already produced the tracks for the album.

How do you start working on a live performance?

R1: Normally we start with making tracks in our studios, and afterwards we convert them to our live gear. When the set is finished we decide who is doing what, and then of course rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse!

The reason why your album was delayed was because you wanted to put a DVD of the live performance with it? Any special reason for that?

R1: We wanted to have some special extra on our album, also because our live set is a more harder version of the album.

What did you think of the crowd during the performance?

R1: What other crowd could we wish for? Brilliant!

And whose idea was it to have a mirrorball with a girl on it, covered in mirrors? Because that was unbelievable!

R1: This idea came up while discussing our entertainment part of our show with ID&T!

What show did you enjoy most? Sensation or Trance Energy? Why?

R1: For us that would be Trance Energy, because that show was better.

Will we see more of your livesets? During other shows in the near present?

R1: We have decided not to do too many sets, especially in Holland where we don't want people to see the same show twice.

What's the first thing you think when you see all those thousands of people jumping up and down to your tunes?

R1: It cannot be described! It's a good feeling for sure! 💫

A little pre @rank1official story about @pietermanus & @bennodegoeij :

Piet & Benno met in 1997 at a birthday party of their mutual friend. Piet was already DJ and producer, Benno didn't have any producing experience but had musical academy background (piano), a huge talent for melodies and was into synthesizers since he was a kid. As they talked, they found out that they have lot in common and a similar taste in electronic dance music.

So they teamed up and began producing under various names as R.O.O.S., System Eight, Precious People, Gualagara, A.I.D.A, Two Disciples but the most successfull project was Pedro & Benno with three releases under that name: Scream For Love/Spaced Entrance in 1997, Talkin' To You/The Wrong Way in 1998 and the one you see here Speechless (playing)/Restricted Level /Sweet Impuls released in 1999, all on Karma Records (sublabel of Basic Beat Recordings).
Do you remember that project and which track is your favorite? 💫

[Pedro & Benno's and R.O.O.S. tracks (still have them on some old compilations!) were spinned a lot in the clubs here and I adored to dance to them - when they appeared as Rank 1, I had no idea it was them as I only cared for artist name and not who is behind it, only later found it out!! So all the way back in 1997, from their very start, my Rank 1 fandom was actually born 😄🤍 ~ @suzich_q ✍️]

This was the very first Rank 1 live set ever at @tranceenergy on 29.4.2000 in Beursgebouw, Eindhoven, which you can find on youtube - sadly it wasn't recorded from the beginning, begins at ID track no3.

But don't worry! Trance Energy got you covered 🙌 and has the whole audio set on their Mixcloud:
