HALFTIME. 🏁 10 DOWN. 10 TO GO.

When we started this series, the idea was simple. 20 interviews. 20 people. 20 different perspectives on what keeps us grounded.

10 interviews in, and this thing has turned into something way cooler than I originally imagined.

The conversations, the stories, the messages, and the responses from everyone following along have made me realize there’s a lot more to this than just 20 videos.

My favorite part has been sitting down with people who are carving their own paths, doing things their own way, and staying true to who they are while figuring it all out. Thank you all who’ve participated for sharing your story!

We’ve got 10 more incredible people lined up to finish what we originally set out to do.

But the more I think about it, the less I see this ending at 20.

Turns out, there’s no shortage of people doing cool shit, making their own rules, and giving us all a little perspective along the way.

So consider this halftime. Not the halfway point.

Born and raised in Chula Vista, Michael Jimenez has been putting on for the South Bay before it was the cool thing to do.

He started out the back of a box truck.

Then came coffee off a tricycle.

Now he runs Chula Vista Water Sports with a team of 8, out of a building he helped bring back to life after sitting dead for over 25 years.

Kayaks. Paddle boards. Fishing gear. Bait. Coffee. Snacks.

Real business. Real community. Real proof of what can happen when you stay down with your city and keep working.

What I respect most about Michael is that he didn’t wait for permission, hype, or for somebody else to prove the vision made sense.

He saw something before it was obvious and had the guts to keep pushing until it became real.

Life tested him, like it does all of us.
But instead of folding, he kept his head down, stayed close to his people, and kept building.

Still dreaming.
Still creating.
Still rooted in family.

Chef Rael Coronado.

Rael grew up in his family’s restaurant in Tijuana, learning early that good food doesn’t come from shortcuts.

It comes from repetition, pressure, pride and showing up every day.

Since then, he’s made a habit out of choosing the harder path.

New kitchens. Bigger expectations. More pressure.

Constantly putting himself in rooms that make him uncomfortable because he knows that’s usually where the next level is.

That mentality has taken him from Tijuana to Valle, Los Cabos and some of San Diego’s best kitchens.

But through all the growth, the foundation never changed.

Family.
Culture.
Work ethic.
Knowing where you come from.

That’s the part that matters.

Because being Grounded isn’t about staying in the same place.

It’s about knowing who you are well enough to keep evolving without losing yourself in the process.

Rael keeps chasing better.

Better food.
Better standards.
A better version of himself.

Still rooted.

Still hungry.

ALWAYS GROUNDED.

Some people cut hair. Los built a whole culture around it.

This week I sat down with El Barber Los from Otter Stop Barber Shop.

He walked away from a long-term career, bet on himself, and turned barbering into something way bigger than a fade and a lineup.

Two shops. Killer merch. A dialed-in aesthetic. Everything has intention behind it.

Los is one of those dudes who’s effortlessly swagged out without ever looking like he’s trying too hard. But the real difference is in the details.

And even more than that, it’s what happens in the chair.

Haircuts turn into conversations. Conversations turn into advice. Sometimes you get checked. Sometimes you get put on game.

You leave looking sharper, but probably thinking a little sharper too.

That’s Los.

Good taste. High standards. Attention to detail. Gentleman shit.

This is what keeps Los grounded. 🫡 SALUTE PERRITO!

Some people keep you Grounded by supporting you. Others do it by checking you when you need it.

Steve Garcia does both. Constantly.

Owner of 3 Punk Ales, The Elwood, head of Emo Brown, and somehow the unofficial face of all things Chula Vista. But to me, he’s always been more like a big brother.

He’s one of the few people I genuinely look up to, one of the even fewer who can call me on my shit, and unfortunately, the man responsible for the nickname I’ll probably never escape: Small Teeth.

Steve has built businesses, community, culture, and a voice that is unapologetically Chula Vista.

This week we fin out what keeps him Grounded.

I almost didn’t post this.

I met Seth by chance. He’s currently living on the streets, and what started as a random conversation turned into an hour or two of just talking about life.

Before we went our separate ways, he thanked me for something I didn’t expect: making him feel human.

Somewhere in that conversation, Seth told me he used to skate. Right now he doesn’t have much, but he’d been trying to save enough money to buy a skateboard because skating was one of the few things that used to make him genuinely happy.

So we went and got one.

I struggled with sharing this because someone else’s hard season should never become someone else’s content. But I also believe this is part of what Grounded is supposed to be.

Not just houses. Not just business. People.

Sometimes giving back isn’t about changing someone’s entire life. Sometimes it’s just reminding someone what happiness feels like and helping them get back to something that makes them feel like themselves again.

Week 3 of What Keeps You Grounded is with Jeff Lozano, the face of Ballast Point Brewing, the San Diego Seals, co-host of Emo Brown Podcast, and everybody’s second favorite Mexican redhead.

Jeff’s story is proof that where you start doesn’t have to look anything like where you finish.

Through all the growth, opportunities and attention, he’s somehow remained the same humble, approachable dude.

We sat down to talk about the road from cleaning bathrooms at Ballast Point to becoming one of San Diego’s most recognizable personalities and what keeps him grounded through all of it

This week we sat down with Taco Fiend, aka Tio Taco, but to me he’s someone I’ve been lucky enough to call a friend for over 20 years. (I’ve been told I can’t use his old AKA 😂)

South Bay born and raised, he’s built an incredible following doing things his own way. But through all the success, he’s remained the same person I’ve always known . A REAL dude, approachable, humble, and connected to the community that raised him.

Giving back has been at the center of what he does since day one. Supporting local restaurants, giving away most of what he makes, and using his platform to help the people around him win too.

For Tio Taco, staying grounded is simple:

Never forget where you came from. Give back to the place that made you. Stay true to yourself.
