This is shocking but nobody cares... 😲

🌊 5 THINGS WE ARE LOSING FROM OUR OCEANS

The ocean can feel endless. But some of the animals and ecosystems that make it extraordinary are disappearing before our eyes.

1. VAQUITAS 🐬
Fewer than 10 vaquitas may remain in the wild. This tiny porpoise is found only in Mexico's Gulf of California and is being pushed toward extinction primarily by illegal gillnets, which accidentally trap and drown them.

2. SHARKS 🦈
Populations of oceanic sharks and rays have declined by 71% since 1970. Overfishing is the biggest driver, with sharks also being caught as bycatch. Sharks play essential roles in marine food webs, and losing them can disrupt entire ecosystems.

3. CORAL REEFS 🪸
We have lost around half of the world's living coral cover since the 1950s. Rising ocean temperatures cause mass bleaching, while pollution, overfishing and coastal development add further pressure. Coral reefs support an enormous amount of marine life and provide food and protection for millions of people.

4. SEA TURTLES 🐢
There isn't one reliable percentage for the decline of all sea turtles globally, but some populations have collapsed by more than 90%. Fishing, egg harvesting, habitat destruction, pollution and climate change all threaten these ancient animals.

5. MARINE BIODIVERSITY 🌊
Monitored marine wildlife populations declined by 49% between 1970 and 2012 according to the Living Planet Index. This doesn't mean 49% of marine species have disappeared. It measures changes in the abundance of monitored populations, reflecting the enormous pressure humans are placing on marine ecosystems.

These aren't just numbers.

Every lost species changes an ecosystem. Every damaged reef removes habitat. Every disappearing population makes the ocean a little less resilient.

But this isn't inevitable.

We can protect marine habitats, reduce overfishing and bycatch, establish and enforce marine protected areas, cut pollution and tackle climate change.

🌊 Protect the ocean while there is still time.

The ocean can't speak for itself. We have to speak for it. 💙
