In THE SCOUT, actress Mimi Davila made a bold creative choice: rather than simply copy the person who inspired her character, she set out to create a fully realized person on screen.

In our latest INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE conversation, the film's director reflects on that choice and what it brought to the performance.

And there's another interesting layer to this story: before becoming a director, she worked as a location scout herself. That firsthand experience brings a particular understanding of the world she's portraying.

A wonderful glimpse into how an actor's interpretation can help bring a filmmaker's vision to life.

*REVIEW*
The Scout (2026, dir. Paula Andrea González-Nasser)

Sofia (Mimi Davila) is a location scout for TV living in New York City. We follow her over the course of a couple of days as she interacts with both friends and strangers as she tries to stay afloat in the chaos of everyday life.

I love films that offer quiet introspection. There is something serene in just watching characters live their lives and extrapolating what you will from all of the small moments. Wim Wenders' Perfect Days was a great example of this. It's a hard style to make work. How do you show mundanity without turning away your audience? How do you make people care? I'm not sure exactly what the answer is, but The Scout had it, though there is a subtle sadness running underneath the surface. You get the sense after a while that this isn't what Sofia wants to be doing. Her aspirations used to be so much larger, but in an age where young people are expected to be constantly on the move, in a city that prioritizes speed, these dreams have been pushed aside for a job that is both so close to and so far away from them. "There's no time to think about time," Sofia says to one of the people whose home she's scouting. This is not someone who is living life, but someone who is merely going through the motions of what is expected of her. Too tired after a day of unexpected misadventures to make good on the promise of going out with a long-time friend. Who is so wrapped up in everything that she almost forgets to feed her neighbor's pet that she promised to feed. Someone who, even though she puts literally her entire life into this job, isn't taken seriously by most of her coworkers, and deals with flippant, casual sexism from both them and the strangers she encounters in her day-to-day. The Scout isn't going to be for everyone. It is glacially slow and not very overt, but I was never bored, and I found it gave me a lesson that, while simple, I was sorely in need of at this moment in my life: Make time for yourself.

Score: 9/10

If you've ever ridden the New York City subway, you know that sometimes reality is stranger than anything a screenwriter could invent.

In this wonderfully funny moment from our conversation about THE SCOUT, we discover how the chaos, surprises, and everyday absurdities of city life can become cinematic gold.

Because sometimes the funniest stories are the ones you could never make up.
