Fundraising Evening for *The Peranakan Association of Singapore - TOK PANJANG GRANDEUR* at Shangri-La Hotel’s Island Ballroom.
A specially curated Tok Panjang by chefs from Peranakan Mansion (Melaka) & Shangri-La Singapore.

Being true blue Peranakan and growing up in the arms of a Peranakan family is a heady and colourful experience — “so drama you” was literally coined for us!😆🤣

“oh pochok”, “chi lah ka nya budah”, amazing food, wine, dancing and songs... these are tell-tale signs you grew up in a lively Nyonya household 🥰🤪

True to our roots: Great Music, Fine Peranakan cuisine, Beautiful Kebayas, Batiks and Cheongsams, Dancing & Outstanding Entertainment in True Blue Peranakan Style.

More than just a fabulous night of merriment and friendship — this was about preserving a heritage that is unique to only this part of the world. The Association’s mission: to promote Peranakan culture to Peranakans and non-Peranakans alike, and keep this legacy alive for future generations.

Love for Peranakan culture in Singapore definitely lives on and will continue to grow!🩷💜❤️ 💛💫

Tunggu Sekejap: The P. Ramlee Suite at & by Wild Rice is a WOW! Musical and Theatre intimate extravaganza of an orchestral tribute with dialogue and showtime starring actor and singer Fadhli Ramlee as the legendary icon P. Ramlee.

Julian Wong is the composer-music director- creative force who sings and narrates and shares his obsession with the music and person that was the legendary P. Ramlee - our superstar composer, singer & actor of the Singapore Malay genre film world of 1947 to early 1970’s.

That lushness of The P. Ramlee Suite in 3 movements composed by Julian Wong and performed by a 30-member chamber orchestra Re:Mix under Foo Say Ming, truly enveloped us in the re-imagined classic songs like “Tunggu Sekejap,” “Azizah,” and “Getaran Jiwa”.

Julian is a teacher always and gave the audience last night a master class in composition and the source of his music structure by a super clever non-teacher insidious workshop that never seemed like one. Great job Julian. Fadhli Ramlee, no relative to P. Ramlee is a talent I have never heard of before and the joy in life is to discover treasures we never knew we had.

Being Peranakan, our Malay heritage is very dear to me and memories of my father and his melodious voice wafting through the house as he sang Malay songs in classic “tarek lagu” style which means to “pull the note” till it touches your heart and soul is just how both Fadhli and Julian and Foo’s string orchestra pulled at our heart strings.

In European classical music language this technique in music is called “glissando” ⁃ to glide!!

Ivan Heng directed - and him being from theatre - this is the 1st time I have seen the women musicians, all dressed in the same outfit with beautiful gold Malay style brooch of cascading splendour at the chest!

Kamsiah Jill for this lovely night - with guests from Johor! Till August 30 - catch this production - the reprise from last year’s debut.

TUNGGU SEKEJAP means to “wait awhile” and we’ve waited quite a while for 2 amazing SG film landmarks - all on Saturday August 15 - an afternoon with Singapore Dreaming (Hokkien, Mandarin & English) - a night with Malay film as the backdrop to the dialogue, song and music!

Chef Philip Chia, thank you so much for hosting me at lunch today at The Line! 🧡
Everything was absolutely delicious — from the Peranakan classics to that innovative *Waffles with Hae Bee Hiam* 😋 It was such a joy to experience your heritage and creativity on one plate.

What a yummy combo… Waffles and Hae Bee Hiam! 🧇❤️ The crisp of the waffle + the sweet, spicy, savoury punch of hae bee hiam = magic. 🩷💫 It’s comfort food, but make it elevated. It’s tradition, but make it playful.

That’s what I love about Peranakan cuisine.
It’s not just food. It’s history on a plate.
A culture built on mixing — different backgrounds, different flavours, made better together.🌈

Thank you Chef Philip Chia and The Line team for this beautiful celebration of our heritage.🇲🇨
If you love Singapore food with a twist, you need to try this before the promo ends!💫

TIEN COURT @ Copthorne King’s Hotel, Havelock Rd, was a popular haunt of newshounds when the Centre Of The Universe of the newspaper world was at Times House, Kim Seng Road.

We re-United - courtesy of Gerry de Silva - stalwarts from the short lived New Nation which morphed into The New Paper - editor Tan Wang Joo, Sylvia Toh Paik Choo, Sonny Yap, Siva Arasu & I - to lunch on a swish and quality Teochew menu - the restaurant as we remember it, used to be Cantonese - in those olden days. I love the pre meal nibbles, usually braised peanuts but here, the chef has outdone him/her self with a YUMS concoction of fried bean curd and bits and pieces of stuff!

The fish maw soup was outstanding with its broth so rich - one positively felt strengthened as it all slid down the throat - as delish as the meal was - the memories were even more scintillating - our fave sports editor and bosom pal Jeff Low had just passed away and stories a plenty were remembered of those raucous Sports Desk Days.

We remembered Jeff - my childhood friend in Katong’s Kuo Chuan Ave - in true Sports Desk style - with humour, affection AND, fittingly as we makan - with a pinch of salt!

Good food? Check. Good finds? Check. Impact? Double check. 🌍
Come shop with purpose with me.
Shop. Eat. Connect. Give back.

Celebrating Paul Drayson’s 90th milestone at the Grand Hyatt was nothing short of wonderful and unforgettable. 💜❤️🩷🙌

From cocktails at 11:15am, to an afternoon filled with camaraderie, music, laughter, and so much warmth — it was a spectacular celebration of a life so well lived. The ushers in red and gold with their beautiful plumes welcomed us with such grace, and the whole afternoon was filled with enormous fun, engaging moments, and good cheer. 🥂🥂🥂

And the joy didn’t stop there… the post-party continued at the Oasis Bar with more champagne, wine, and toasts to Paul!🥂🥂🥂 🎉🥂

Thank you, Zaibun and Paul, for being such generous, gracious hosts and for giving us a day we’ll all treasure. 🙏🏼

Happy 90th, Paul. With love from all of us. 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂

Everyone is fighting their own battles. But not everyone gets to tell their story out loud.

Last night I watched Wild Rice’s Girls Girls Girls and walked out moved.

Mother. Olympian. Comedian. Dancer. Queer elder. Baby dyke. Real women, real stories, centre stage.

In a world where queer women are often invisible in mainstream media, this play does the opposite. It listens. It names. It celebrates. Based on real interviews, it asks the questions we don’t ask enough: How do you define your culture? Is invisibility protection or erasure? How do you find your chosen family in a conservative space?

Girls Girls Girls is proof that when we give people a stage, we give them dignity. And when we listen, we realise we’re not so different after all.

We all carry battles scares people can’t see. We all deserve to be seen.

Thank you @wildrice_sg for this. And @carolinelim23 for the hospitality + invite 💛

Go see this. Especially during Pride Month. You’ll leave with more empathy than you came in with.
