Happy #nationalfossilday! Last week, members of Gastonia UFOP volunteered to help clean dozens of theropod tracks alongside @paleo_intel, @moabgiants staff, @maya.giannecchini, our chapter’s scientific advisor Emily Lessner, and @mypubliclands employees at the Mail Station Dinosaur Tracksite. We thank everyone who joined us last week, and thank Paul Murphey and his colleagues for organizing this project!

The Mail Station site is on BLM land, situated on the Navajo Sandstone and containing hundreds of tridactyl (three-toed) footprints of theropod dinosaurs; mostly Eubrontes (=Dilophosaurus), with tracks of smaller animals and one possible sauropod! The Eubrontes here are unique in that multiple individuals ran at full speed across this area during different events (running tracks layered over older running tracks!) and tells us a lot about the behavior of Early Jurassic dinosaurs and how fast they could move!

Volunteer work like this is hard, but many hands make light work and it is always exciting to get to dig for fossils! Visit our monthly Gastonia meetings to find more Citizen Science opportunities like this!

We had a great talk yesterday at @geosociety annual meeting in Denver showcasing our @uintabasinproject stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental data. Our lead geologist Dr. Paul Murphey @paleo_intel gave a fantastic talk. And our outstanding geochemist @paleololigo Dr. Penny Higgins gave us some amazing paleo temperature and paleo precipitation results that are going to shed some light on the MECO event in northern Utah. Can’t wait to show you all more cool results from our project! #hyperthermal #eocene #climate

Whether it’s three drops of milk and a piece of garlic skin, just getting today’s lunch out or figuring out how easy it is to make people smile with hard-boiled eggs… Endeavour makes me happy and that’s after 12 days of sharing the boat with these wonderful paleo nerds.

Hey friends… Want to make sure you know we are opening up our science research expeditions to include “adult learners”. That means normal folks (ha!) – as long as they are curious and fun and fit enough to get in and out of boats — can join us. These trips are not cruises. They are hands-on serious science research and by coming, you are helping to support that effort.

Most immediately, we have an open bunk on our late May southeast Alaska fossil dig with Dr. Paul Murphy. Paul is not only leading paleontologist, but one of our favorite faculty. I’ve been out with him on two different expeditions— he knows how to make it all as fun as it is incredibly educational. We will be digging deep into history from Ketchikan to Juneau with a heavy focus on the Keku Straits, a sort of hidden heart of Southeast Alaska. You’ll learn things like how the area used to be a tropical reef… I’m not kidding.

If you have any interest in fossils not to mention, enjoying the beauty of Alaska wilderness, my cooking 😉 or Captain Bill’s all around maritime knowledge, now is a great time to join us. It’s $400 off!

But if you’re more Into glaciers and climate change, we will be doing a study surveying dozens of glaciers throughout Prince William sound in the first half of July doing comparative historical photography with Dr. Bruce Molnia.

Or for you dinosaur enthusiasts we will be tracking dinosaur footprints (!!!!) with Dr Tony Fiorillo – along the Alaska Peninsula, the first half of September.

Lastly, if science isn’t your bag and you’re more of a PNW boater type you can join me and Bill for a Wilderness Mariner Course. We have an all woman’s trip In September, along the Alaska Peninsula, and a coed trip in the first half of October that circumnavigates Kodiak and over to Katmai.

Both of those trips will be filled with glaciers and volcanoes; bears and whales, but then most of our trips are.
It would be great to fill our last few bunks with friends If you know others who might be interested, please share— because we can’t afford to have an empty berth. Thanks!

I’ve been working almost full time, and mentioned my being almost too busy to my neighbor, Sophia. I started describing Endeavour’s season ahead and how crazy busy but rewarding it was to be working with paleontologists, ornithologists, glacier experts, to plan expeditions with all of them – digging fossils in southeast, studying glaciers and climate change in Prince William sound, and even a dinosaur footprint dig out on the Alaska Peninsula.

Here I was starting to gush about how both busy and excited I was because these research trips have always only been available to graduate and undergraduate students for college credit studies until now, but over the years more and more “lifelong learners” are interested in joining as well, so our educational partner, the Institute for Field Research is opening the trips to others. Now regular old rock hounds, paleo nerds, glacier geeks or dinosaur enthusiasts can join us. Since I started with Endeavour, friends have been asking how they could ever come along on a trip, saying how envious they were of the students we hosted. Now it’s available to them and it’s my job to let everyone know.

“Like me”, she said and smiled. “I didn’t have a clue, and I want to know about them all.”

We both laughed because even my neighbor didn’t know about Endeavour programs being open to her and others who just like to learn and do, especially when it’s going to help support the research. I’ve been so busy networking social media and the wider world, I hadn’t even started with my own people.

In six weeks we will be headed north again, but this time it’ll be our first all-women’s Alaska Wilderness Mariner’s Course, 10 days with a great group of enthusiastic boating gals of all ages from all over, like Sweden, New Zealand, and all across Canada – even Alaskans are signing up. There’s another all-women’s in September, and a co-ed trip in October circumnavigating Kodiak.

Between the spring and fall, there are still openings on our Fossil Dig, Glacier & Climate Study and Dinosaur Footprint Dig.

OK, in all seriousness… this isn’t a fossil.

It’s just one of our happy crew members celebrating an accidental discovery on the beach.

But it does capture a simple truth about exploring with Alaska Endeavour:
you never quite know what you’ll find.

What we do know is that you’ll have a lot of fun—and learn a lot along the way.

On this 12-day expedition aboard Endeavour, you’ll explore with paleontologist Dr Paul Murphy, one of our favorite faculty experts, searching for ancient life preserved in Alaska’s coastal rock formations.

Together we locate, uncover, and document fossils revealed by tides and weather along the remote shorelines of Southeast Alaska’s remarkable archipelago.

Every landing holds the possibility of uncovering something that hasn’t seen daylight for millions of years. Pretty cool.
