So while I was editing this post, I was originally just going to call it Book Recommendations: Dark Academia. But then I realised as I was going through the books listed that I rated all of them 5 stars🫢. I shouldn’t be too surprised though because dark academia is actually one of my fav book genres😂😂.

I also wanted to give each book a one sentence blurb and it was surprisingly difficult to narrow it down to only one sentence lmao, so it took me quite a while to do😭.

Let me know if I convinced you to read any of these books👀👀.

Update on my health:
I’ve somehow miraculously gained most of my appetite back as soon as I arrived from my holiday in Oslo, I honestly don’t know how but I’ve been able to eat much more food than I could 2 weeks ago😭🙏🏻. I think my condition still fluctuates depending on the day though so I need to keep monitoring myself😔.

After seeing @taliasreading post of this challenge, I knew I had to join in! I’ve tagged a couple friends (no pressure!) but if you see this and wanna join in consider it your tag!

picking 5 books for each category was so hard, but this was so much fun!! (and yes I had to include Divine Rivals twice 🤭)

💭 5 books I can’t stop thinking about - these 5 books are all so different but I don’t think I will forget them ever!! Particularly Babel and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue have left a lasting mark on me.

📚5 books I want to read - some of these have been on my tbr for ages and some I’ve had physical copies for almost 6 months and I’m yet to get round to reading them but I’m so excited for all of these!!

📖5 books I want to reread - as a mood reader I love to reread my faves!! These are a few books I’d love to reread this year! I desperately have been wanting to reread the Throne of Glass series (considering a ToG summer marathon) as it’s one of my faves!!

“This book will make you happy!”😃 Yes, it did indeed because I somehow finished the book drowning in happy tears.

At this point I will read anything Olivie Blake writes because this book has solidified her as one of my favourite authors 🙌🏻. This was fun and entertaining, which is always guaranteed in Olivie Blake’s novels 🙂‍↕️. Bear in mind her writing style and narrative form is quite unique and does take some time to get used to so this won’t be for everyone.

I was reading the physical ARC alongside the audiobook, and I enjoyed listening to the audio! I think the narration suited the tone of the book and had great delivery on the humorous parts.

It did take some time for me to get invested but then it started picking up after 35% for me. Even though there was not much plot, the characters really took the spotlight with their intense family drama. There was a large cast of characters and somehow Olivie made them vivid and easy to follow without confusion.

Our main trio: Meredith, Eilidh, and Arthur share a complex and complicated sibling relationship. They’re all entitled, flawed, chaotic, and privileged brats that Psychologists would love to psychoanalyse. Even though they were unlikeable, I ended up getting so emotionally invested in how their story played out🥹.

You love to hate them but then you also hate to love them.

I only realised how much I cared about each character after I started tearing up so many times because I was not prepared for the wholesomeness 😩.

Great Big Beautiful Life was in every way a great big beautiful love story. It overflowed with every kind of love: romantic love, family love, friendship, and my heart felt so full by the end. Emily Henry amazed me again with her stunning prose and emotional honesty😭🤍

At first I expected a light read filled with charming banter in Emily’s usual romcom style. While her wit is still there, this book goes much deeper. If Beach Read and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo teamed up, this would be the result. The layers of emotion took me by surprise, but the ending made every moment worth it🥹

The romance was absolutely adorable in its quiet way. It sneaks up on you and makes you smile unexpectedly. So many soft, sweet moments genuinely made me say “aww” out loud. Hayden was a wonderful character. He was flawed for sure, but the way he welcomed Alice and cared for everyone quietly captured my heart and added warmth to the story🩷

Even though the story is told entirely from Alice’s point of view, every character felt vivid and alive. I could feel their personalities, emotions, and hidden struggles as if they stood right beside her!

The historical fiction element was also beautifully woven in, adding richness and nostalgia. I pictured every detail and loved how it tied into Alice’s journey✨

This is not a typical romance. It’s more introspective, more human, but it is absolutely a love story in the truest sense. If you want something that feels like a soft ache and a warm hug at the same time, Great Big Beautiful Life is for you🥹🤍✨

If you’re looking for a book nostalgic of the dystopian book era, then you might like this. However, I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re expecting something new and original within the dystopian genre.

Let’s start with what I did like.

The pacing was fast and the plot was addictive and entertaining most of the time so I did speed through this book. I did enjoy the different trials that were thrown at the soldier recruits. Despite me enjoying most of the plot, the last 50 pages was too messy for me to even enjoy.

It was fascinating seeing the power imbalance between Primes and Mods and the oppression that both types of people have experienced in this dystopian world. But I would have liked more discussion on the oppression.

Now onto what I didn’t like.

I felt no connection with either the FMC or MMC as a couple or as individuals. The FMC was a lot more tolerable for me though. I was impressed with her cleverness at times but other times she was extremely reckless so I couldn’t help but burst out laughing from the whiplash of her acting reckless one moment and then clever in the next.

The romance had a lot of lusting and spice but barely any emotional development and I personally prefer more emotional depth in romances before even getting to the spice.

Did I cringe at the interactions between the FMC and MMC? Honestly, yes, quite a lot. But I think the plot made up for my lack of enjoyment with the romance. Be prepared for MANY descriptions of how insanely hot the enemy captain is. And yeah, I get it girl, he’s insanely hot. But what else is there? His brooding and yet compassionate personality underneath doesn’t really stand out among other MMCs.

GUESS WHO’S BACKKKKKK???

Here’s my small wrap up on the 2 books I read🤗 I’m actually shocked I managed to squeeze these in during the chaos of my last semester of university. I’ll be catching up on doing review posts for all the books I’m behind on.

I submitted my last EVER uni coursework yesterday so I have more free time and feel less stressed out🥳. I’m literally giggling at the thought that I can finally read as much as I want without any guilt and I can finally do things that I’ve been excited for now that university is over.

Tbh I’m quite worried about results day because I don’t feel that confident about my dissertation research report but whatever happens, happens😭. I’m gonna try to stop worrying about it too much over the next month.

AND ALSO!!! Thank you to everyone who has ever sent me nice messages of encouragement/congrats whenever I posted about uni on my stories🥹🫶🏻 THANK YOUU for still sticking around my booksta😩😩💕

Anyways, I’m running out of photos for my booksta posts because I take batch photos every few months but the last time I did it was actually last year🤣 I haven’t had time to do it because… uni😞. So I need to do another photoshoot very soon. Can you tell I love planning out my posts ahead by taking pics way in advance?😂 excluding physical ARC posts ofc, I usually take those photos separately.
