The Ausangate circuit; part 1. One of Peru’s premier hiking regions, and also its best cycling (so far for us at least). 5000m passes, easy pushing, and flowing downhill single track. After multiple days of snow/rain/cloud we managed to catch a great weather window for the two and a half days we were on the circuit. There’s not much more to say except pack light, bring a camera, and enjoy the ride.

the last stretch of road really tested me. everyday it was threatening to rain or thunderstorm until it did, I had some minor heat exhaustion because of the high humidity and temps, I got a stomach virus that prevented me eating the calories I needed, the driving here is super dangerous for cyclists, and I had a little mental depression to top it off. but so it goes.

most importantly,,, for just over six months now we have been working towards Tbilisi, and it’s wild to finally be here! we have two more weeks to cycle in Armenia but it feels so good to have made it to our end destination.

I’ve been editing a writing sample from my book this week, and I’ve been going back through my photos from cycling across the US and Canada to fine up the details. Here’s a selection of my favourite stills.

From getting my face stitched up in Iowa City to dumpster diving for donuts (so many donuts), pitching up at campsites where everyone else had generators, speakers, and a bus towing a car, to all the lovely humans I met in the cities (not pictured! I guess I was a bit useless at that).

Sometimes editing is so hard because I hate perceiving myself and my own voice (even though editing other people’s work has been a big part of my job!) - thankfully I’ve had a few lovelies helping to give me feedback on my writing this week to help me push through and tidy it up ✨

After dusting ourselves off after the school celebration the night before, we prepared to tackle the first challenge of the Tres Cordilleras route, a steep hiking section. We had heard reports that one group hadn’t been able to find their way through from the north, but we thought we might get a way through from the south. Unfortunately, landslides had taken out three seperate trails, and after 4 hours of scrambling around loose scree trying to make something work, we gave up and camped in a nearby soccer clubhouse. We had had a trail dog before, but never a child, and after this very sweet girl followed us out of town and came running after Lauren, she had to be taken back down the road to her house.

Without enough food to complete a detour for our original route, we bailed out to Lake Titicaca, where we had prolonged tarmac for the first time since June, and made our way into Peru to rejoin the route

I seem to have forgotten to post my favourites from a shoot with Amy @paperroadsaotearoa. If you live in Aotearoa and you bikepack there is no way you haven’t heard of Amy. She’s a legend and the day spent in her studio and heading out for a bit of a ride were really fun. Looking at these makes me miss NZ a lot, looking forward to my next visit already. I’ve got a frame bag and hip pack on the way, that will really tie my new bikepacking setup together.

Over the weekend at @spoken.bike, about 10 people said to me 'there's a lot of beautiful bikes here but this is the one I could see myself having'. This really resonated. While looks are important, Auren bikes generally won't have the flashiest paint job around, they're created for a purpose and that's reflected in every aspect of the design.

Thank you Mark @11t7 for lending your bike and your design input and ideas into this build.

Shout out to @paperroadsaotearoa for this Ultra 200 based direct mount bag that got a lot of attention.
