@papersneaker is a mixed-media artist and designer working between London and Hong Kong, and her projects are truly unique and inspiring.

“100 Paper Sneakers” is a celebration of sneaker culture and the creativity it inspires. The project features 100 hand-crafted reinterpretations of Nike’s iconic Air Jordan 1, all made out of paper and each with its own unique design and character.

‘Women, Community and Arts’ 💃🎨🖌️

What a beautiful evening with an incredible line up of speakers. These community-building women shared their thoughts on the power of harnessing a network. It was wonderful hearing their ability to bring people together through creative outlets, shared experiences and unique paths.

Thank you @bompasandparr for a delightful experience at the Sensorium. A love letter to Regent Street, this multi-sensory experience brings together a collection by @aromariamx (with their homage scents), delectable, colourful jellies, as well as fascinating stories (delivered in both paper and in audio formats!).

So much of it was bespoke and made by the studio, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and depth of research. I loved how the components altogether celebrate our shared London heritage.

We also had the opportunity to hear some fascinating speeches, and learn some intriguing facts:

👃Humans possess a nasal cycle, whereby we alternate airflow between our nostrils, which impact how we smell.
👅 Certain researchers have concluded that we possess well beyond the five senses, and actually we have 22!
🎶 Music’s ability to boost productivity is thought to be linked to its tempo (50 to 80 beats per minute is the ‘optimal’ range!).
🧠 Apparently when our senses send conflicting signals, our brains are forced to prioritise certain senses or blend the experience into something new.
💪🏼The suffragettes would often seek refuge at the Liberty department store as it was where women could gather without attracting suspicion… 👀

🫨 Don’t miss the wibbly wobbler, where you will try to balance on a board that wiggles you around whilst sampling a jelly treat!
💐Try the scent of Regent Street!

It was great exploring this with some members of @musesinthecity .

Verdict: an overdue dose of joyful nostalgia. It is much needed in a world that often gives you little room for pause. A sweet-smelling and tasty reminder to take a moment… have a wobble and take a sniff!

You might've seen me talking about Muses in the City already, but in case it's unfamiliar, I thought I'd introduce it properly...

My friend Yinsey (@tornandpolished) devised the idea of gathering 9 women together to create events and spaces for others to join in celebrating creativity and heritage. (In ancient Greece, Muses represented literature, science, and the arts, and by the Classical period there were 9.) So we've hosted things like museum trips, art gallery sketching, themed days at historical places, and most recently a talk from experts in the fields of archaeology and music! The aim is to inspire creative pursuits, encourage connection and inclusion, emphasise the importance of history, highlight female contributions, and make more opportunities for these things to happen.

Some highlights so far for me have been hearing someone say "I've never sketched at a museum before, but this made me get out of my comfort zone to do it", seeing conversations spark between people from all different backgrounds, and getting to experience the wisdom of these inspiring women firsthand.

It can look a bit like dressing up in fun outfits, deep meandering conversations, and laughter over shared interests, but I've already seen the positive and supportive community it's built over the past 6 months since our first meeting!

There are more exciting Muses events and developments in the works... more soon!

2024 was a wonderful year for Muses in the City. Founded by 9 women in the middle of summer, we wanted to find a way to bring self-identifying women (and allies!) in the City together to enjoy art, heritage and culture.

We organised four events since our founding on 25 July 2024, including:

🖌️ Visit to ASC Studios in Brixton, followed by Pizza at the beautiful Canova Hall
✍🏼 Sketching at the National Portrait Gallery, followed by Dim Sum
🏛️ Ground Floor Tour of the British Museum, followed by Japanese food
☕️🍰 Tea and Cake at the historic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

✨ Membership is at around 80 members
✨ Feedback has been so positive, with attendees noting how it has been a fantastic platform to meet new people, discuss potential collaborations and extend their skills and world view
👀 Look out if you can for postcards we leave around the City and beyond, as we share some of our favourite images and insights into our members’ artistic sensibilities with anyone who may pick one up!

Excited to see you all in 2025!
