The Bay Area is host to the world's AI ambitions, the latest swing in San Francisco's cycles of boom and bust. Chef David Barzelay (@davidbarzelay) sees the same push and pull in restaurant work: there are times when it's easy to love, and times when it's tough. In a letter to the city's hospitality community, he says the sacrifices are well known and makes the case for the joys that make them worthwhile—from a trade that can't be made remote or replaced by AI to the chaotic nights when a crew holds the line. With autumn in the air, we’ve been craving a change of scenery. 🍂 This entails expanding not only our horizons, but our taste buds. Luckily, our region is rich with edible adventures to suit every budget. For our October issue, we hit the road to bring you dispatches from up north (Lancaster and Philadelphia), down south (D.C., Annandale, and Virginia), and over east (the Eastern Shore).

Each of these escapades feels like a world away but is situated less than a day’s drive from Baltimore. So fasten your seat belt (and loosen your belt strap); something delicious is awaiting you just down the road. 🍲🚗

Also included in the print issue:
🍻 Raise Your Chalice: Ministry of Brewing Serves Up Fellowship and Ale
🧟‍♂️ Night Terrors: Our Spine-Tingling Haunted House Photo Essay
🐟 From The Folks Who Brought You Faidley’s: We Review The Fishmonger’s Daughter

Physical copies are landing locally now. Grab yours at neighborhood grocery stores like Eddie’s of Roland Park and Whole Foods 🛒; shops like Good Neighbor, Equitea, or Carpet Cafe 🍵; and bookstores like Greedy Reads, The Ivy, and Atomic Books. 📚

These trees look like they had a wild night out. They're called drunken forests.

As permafrost thaws, the ground becomes unstable and boggy, causing trees to tilt or even sink. And drunken forests, which grow above the permafrost, are increasingly common across the Arctic.

It’s estimated that the world could lose up to 40 per cent of its current permafrost by the end of the century. Drunken forests have become a major point of study for scientists keeping a close eye on the Far North, which, according to recent studies, is warming four times more quickly than the rest of the world.

And when drunken forests eventually die, the disruptive impact on the ecosystem extends to water quality, because dead trees falling into nearby bodies of water release carbon and mercury as they decompose.

That’s why researchers at the Scotty Creek Research Station are monitoring drunken forests, as well as other signs of climate change, including water quality, soil biogeochemistry, greenhouse gas fluxes and soil carbon storage.

The station, located just over 60 kilometres south of Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, became an all-season research facility in 2003. Since then, it's had to move twice because of rapid permafrost thaw, which caused the land around the station to become increasingly boggy.

Another @iconconference in the books! This time we got to visit the MICA campus in Baltimore in the sweltering heat, lol.
Joel and I met loads of lovely and super talented people. I’m going back the studio energized and inspired, which is exactly what I had hoped for. 🙌🏼

FUN NEWS! We’re welcoming Chantal Bennett and Joel Kimmel to talk about and sign some copies of their book, The Chip Stand. For 10 years, illustrators Chantal Bennett and Joel Kimmel have taken road trips around Canada searching for the best chip stands, interviewing the owners and celebrating the colourful stands in drawings and paintings. Their beautiful illustrations capture the eclectic aesthetic of chip stands from British Columbia to Newfoundland.

AND fun fact, Joel actually spent a couple years of his childhood living in Deep River, so the roots run deep!

Happy Indie Bookstore Day! @indiebookstoresca We had a great time signing books and meeting people at The Book’s Better in Smiths Falls, a wonderful bookshop with lovely books and gifts and a friendly owner, Jennifer, who used to own the chip wagon where we went to lunch after our appearance at her store.

Nothing like garlic Parmesan fries to satiate that hunger after signing books!

Don’t miss the pic of Be Scared of Everything by our friend Peter Counter @peterbcounter. This amazing book helped us better understand the meaning behind horror and to appreciate it so much more than ever.

We stumbled across this fun picture book about poutine today! Makes a great accompaniment to The Chip Stand.

In the first slide we made an alternate version of this year’s awesome Indie Bookstore poster by @sad_sharp . Pigeons roam chip stands too of course but the gull has become something of a mascot for us!

Enjoy exploring bookstores this weekend. Thanks again to everyone who came out to see us today!!
