I keep circling the same uneasy truth: we talk about what children need as if every answer can be bought, scheduled, optimized, or outsourced.

We chase better schools, activities, gear, opportunities, savings, experiences, and proof that we did enough by everyone else’s standards.

Yet a child can have every material comfort and still inherit little of what helps a person become capable, grounded, discerning, and harder to manipulate.

They can have access to everything and still not know what their family stands for, what adulthood asks of them, how to carry grief, how freedom is earned, how responsibility changes relationships, what money cannot touch, what their body is for, who they want to become, or where they belong when the internet goes quiet.

This is why I keep stretching the word wealth far beyond bank accounts and investment portfolios.

I’m interested in what actually moves between generations: habits carried in the body, stories told in kitchens, skills passed down during chores, and how a family makes sense of the world together.

Money can support some of it… but most of it cannot be purchased. And this is where initiation comes into focus.

Initiation asks adults to notice when a child is changing and take that shift seriously enough to teach, gather, witness, mark the moment, and hand over real trust. It also asks us to stop treating childhood like a holding pen before ā€œreal lifeā€ begins.

I also think many adults are grieving the same absence. We crossed huge thresholds with barely a word to mark them. We became adults through mistakes, bills, heartbreak, consequences, peers, advertising, work, porn, breakups, illness, debt, death, and whatever algorithm got to us first.

But this doesn’t mean we’re SOL… it just means becoming more deliberate about what we pass on from here.

"It was always my hope that we had come to trouble structure. Not merely accept it." - Ta-Nehisi Coates

For over a decade the @aapnationalconference was one of the highlights of my year. A place that I thought I was learning from & connecting with colleagues that were there to trouble structure on behalf of kids, not merely accept it.

But the last three years have opened my eyes to the heartbreaking reality that far too many FAAPs & most all of the @ameracadpeds leadership have accepted the structure of silence when it comes to Palestinian lives.

The biggest issue impacting our children's health in 2026 is not vaccines.

It's not Medicaid.

It's not gun violence.

It is dehumanization.

Yet the AAP continues to refuse to acknowledge the incredible harm dehumanization is playing in our society & over the course of the last three years has ignored petitions & letters from members, the internal advocacy of the member elected health equity leadership, & even resolutions voted on & passed by all AAP leaders.

I spoke at the 2022 University of Minnesota School of Public Health commencement about how we all have reasons for our work & seasons in which we do it.

The reason for my work remains the same: trying to heal our kids, communities & healthcare systems by centering marginalized communities & "troubling structure, not merely accepting it."

My season for spending my time, talents & money in the AAP towards that reason has come to an end.

There are other ways to trouble structures like the AAP & other ways to ultimately help bring about the world our children deserve.

ALL our children.
