Celebrating 15 years of Parker Library On the Web 2024-25

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today we celebrated #BibleSunday with a brilliant sermon from Prof David F Ford, OBE (listen now on our livestream!), followed by coffee at @corpuscambridge, a viewing of our first edition KJV Bible gifted to us by Thomas Hobson 400 years ago, and a visit to the exhibition at the @parkerlibrary.
Enormous thanks to Prof Philippa Hoskin, the Revd Dr Robert Hawkins @corpuscamchapel, and the Master and Fellows of the College of Corpus Christi and the Blessed Virgin Mary, for their generous hospitality and for being such wonderful neighbours these last 674 years!

So grateful to @corpuscambridge and the @parkerlibrary and @corpuscamchapel, and to our preacher, Dr David F. Ford, for making possible this special celebration of our @stbenetscam history and of Scripture!

This year is the 400th anniversary of Thomas Hobson’s donation of a first-edition copy of the Authorised Translation
(KJV) to St Bene’t’s, now kept for us by Corpus Christi. Professor David Ford, Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus, will preach for us at the 10am service on Sunday 27 October.
And then we will process over to Corpus Chrisiti College, to view our historic bible - and other Biblical manuscripts and works at the Parker Library.
Hobson, is /that/ Hobson, of Hobson’s Conduit & Hobson’s Choice. Deeply involved in the parish community, he was churchwarden at Bene’t’s and is buried in our chancel.
Everyone is invited for this special celebration of God’s Word, and of the history of St Bene’t’s and Cambridge!

Did you know that Corpus was founded in 1352 (in the aftermath of the Black Death🐀) by the members of the Guild of Corpus Christi and the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Congratulations to our fourth cohort of Medieval Worlds students, who visited Corpus Christi earlier this month for a residential on medieval history, literature and Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic Studies! We had an amazing time being hosted by Corpus Christi's Medieval @parkerlibrary, our college Conservation Centre, and the Fitzwilliam Museum where the students had insightful academic sessions (featuring lots of coins, parchment and manuscripts)! 🎉 📚 🎭

We hope you left even more inspired to pursue your interests in the medieval world!! 💡 ✨

Why don’t more people know about Æthelstan? 🤔👑

Robinson Fellow, author and historian Professor David Woodman (Faculty of History, University of Cambridge) explains why he isn’t better known and why he’s campaigning for greater recognition for the overlooked king.

📍 The Parker Library, Corpus Christi College

The @ParkerLibrary is @CorpusCambridge's greatest national heritage treasure. It is internationally renowned for its important collection of medieval and renaissance manuscripts, as well as valuable holdings of early printed books.

The collection, largely established by Matthew Parker, who was Archbishop of Canterbury and Master of the College in the late sixteenth century, includes such magnificent books as the sixth-century Gospels of Augustine, the earliest copy of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Bury Bible and the autograph copy of Matthew Paris’ Chronica majora.

Cracking the medieval calendar code in the inimitable @parkerlibrary …and the captions thought I was saying ‘Saint Lee’ calendars and ‘gnomes’ instead of ‘nones’ and the last word is a deliberate and now habitual mistake caught from the great @stephen.paul.wilkinson.

Oh and, captions, ‘protinent’ Reformation?? Protestant. Protestant.

Thank you, @corpuscambridge, for letting us in last Autumn to pore over Matthew Paris’s 13th-century autograph manuscripts. Thank you, @anabooks, for wonderful camera work.
