Parto Maldito es de esas películas que hay que empujar para llegar hasta el final. Con casi dos horas de duración, su ritmo extremadamente lento hace que el recorrido se vuelva pesado y, por momentos, realmente nos costó muchísimo verla.

La historia se mete de lleno en un folk horror de sacrificios y rituales, un género que nos gusta y que acá intenta construir una atmósfera inquietante. Sin embargo, sentimos que queda varios escalones por debajo de las grandes exponentes del género. Muchas de sus ideas están, pero necesitan una ejecución más sólida para conseguir entretener y generar impacto.

La película da vueltas constantemente sobre los mismos conceptos, como atrapada en un bucle, hasta llegar a un desenlace que termina dejando la sensación de que todo ese recorrido no conduce a demasiado

Su trama trata sobre una mujer embarazada que hereda una casa de una mujer mayor desconocida. Ella y su novia se mudan para prepararse para el nacimiento de su hijo, pero pronto descubren que algo extraño sucede en el pueblo

¿Qué podemos rescatar? Las actuaciones, que son buenas aunque están bastante desaprovechadas y tienden mucho más hacia el drama que hacia el terror. También está correctamente filmada y consigue construir algunos momentos interesantes desde lo visual.

El problema aparece justamente cuando debería golpear más fuerte: en momentos claves, la película decide no mostrar prácticamente nada. Y tratándose de una historia de rituales y sacrificios, se extraña mucho más sangre y contundencia.

Una peli con buenas intenciones y algunos elementos interesantes, pero demasiado lenta y repetitiva para lograr que el ritual termine funcionando

It is not common for a humble little film like The Off Hours to be celebrated 15 years down the road. I don't take it for granted and I truly couldn't be more proud and grateful. Thank you to the beautiful cast & producers for coming out last night, to Vidiots and Mark Duplass for hosting, to every one of the crewtopians & supporters who helped create the film in the first place, to Visit Films for continuing to get it out into the world, and to @sundanceorg for programming it back in 2011 and changing my life.

This is a hard week for me on a personal level, and last night's screening was full of love and friendship and was a much needed balm to my soul. Thank you to all who attended & feted my little cinema child.

15 years ago @thecinechick made a beautiful nuanced film #theoffhours. I was honored to be a producer of it-my first feature as a producer. It featured such talents as @partridgeross @amy.seimetz.1981 @thelynnshelton #TonyDoupe and #ScootMcNairy as well as my niece @four_square_king and nephew @four_square_duke . When we premiered it at Sundance I’d found out a week earlier I was pregnant with my daughter Opal. Now 15 years older, I am thrilled to go see the film and introduce it to my daughter. Hey LA! THE OFF HOURS will be having a 15th anniversary screening at Vidiots on August 16th! I'll be in attendance along with many of the fabulous cast & crew to reminisce with the great Mark Duplass, the OG OH booster who instigated this screening and will moderate the Q&A!

This film was a big milestone in my life and stands as a testament to the dedication of the film's producers (Mischa Jakupcak, Lacey Leavitt Gray, and Joy Saez), who labored alongside me for many years to get it made; the stellar cast, who brought subtlety and heart to this film and have gone on to such incredible careers; and my beloved Seattle film community (aka Crewtopia), who made beautiful images that far exceed what should have been possible on this budget.

If you get inspired by people coming together to push boulders uphill, have we got some stories for you! And if you have folks in your life that have ever felt stuck, or longed for something more, this film was made to show that it's never too late to become the person you were meant to be.
