Last week, I had the honour of joining the panel at Gallery Fold × @samsungnederland / @samsung_be , where we talked about AI, creativity and its growing place within the art world.

One statistic stayed with me: 43% of Belgians already see AI as a fully-fledged tool for creating good art.

I find that incredibly encouraging.

I don’t see AI as a replacement for painting, sculpture, photography or any other art form. Quite the opposite. I see it as something new joining them, another medium through which artists can explore ideas, emotions and stories.

Of course, this new technology comes with questions.

Its environmental impact deserves attention, and I’m encouraged to see efforts being made towards more efficient technology, data centres and cleaner energy. Every creative medium has an environmental footprint in one form or another. The goal shouldn’t be to point fingers, but to keep finding better and more responsible ways to create.

Copyright deserves the same thoughtful conversation. Questions around training data, consent and artists’ rights are important. But they can exist alongside another reality: original art can be created with AI.

Art has always evolved through experimentation, influence and new ways of seeing. Dada challenged what art could be. Collage created new meaning by bringing fragments together. Pop Art found an artistic language in the visual culture of everyday life.

AI is different from all of them, but perhaps we are once again witnessing the arrival of a new medium that asks us to reconsider what creating can mean.

I started exploring generative AI in early 2022, and I’m proud to be part of a pioneering generation of artists exploring its possibilities while its artistic language is still being shaped.

Not against traditional art.
Not instead of traditional art.
Alongside it.

And maybe, a few years from now, we won’t even feel the need to call it “AI art” anymore.

We’ll simply call it art, tout court. ❤️

A little walk through Gallery FOLD Brussels ✨

I’m so happy to be part of this exhibition with Samsung and to have the opportunity to show my work at Gallery FOLD in Brussels.

Beyond seeing the works come together in the gallery, one of the things I enjoyed most was meeting and talking with some of the other artists. There’s something quite special about realizing that, even when our practices and approaches are very different, we somehow speak the same language.

The AI art community has brought so many wonderful people into my life over the past few years. There’s a real sense of connection, curiosity and mutual support, and it was beautiful to experience that again here.

A huge thank you @samsung_be and @samsungnederland for making this possible, to @lisa_klop and the Gallery FOLD team for bringing it all together, and a very special thank you @ddking_art for recommending my work 💛

If you’re in Brussels, come and have a look!
