The great Wendell Berry has joined the chorus of the heavens. Rest in peace Wendell. This first group of images are details from a painting from last summer. I was wondering what to paint and I heard the voice of Wendell Berry say “go paint the cosmos and the zinnias in the garden…. “ So I did.. His voice was so clear in my mind that I scrawled it out on a piece of cardboard, and it hangs in my studio to this day. This painting is 60 tall by 40 wide. It is available right from my studio, direct message me if you might be interested I can send you a detailed video. The second group of images is of a painting, I titled after his poem,”The Peace of Wild Things”. His poems like all of his work is worth a read, a deep dive, a soak it into your heart, a carry with you wherever you go. The second painting was done nearly 10 years earlier…. What I didn’t realize is, they are exactly the same size. Wendell Berry is was wonderful writer a consistent human being. And if I hear his voice again I will certainly listen to what he tells me to paint next! A message from the heavens.

A personal favorite that is included in the Willow invitational exhibition. This one for me, is greater than the sum of its parts. Such simple objects; a small scalloped edge bowl that I bought in a charity shop in Scotland filled with moss and a blue bell at its side….. so quiet , so expansive. The Willow Invitational exhibition and sale opens today. Thank you to all of those who worked on this show and sale. I wish I could be there with you all to celebrate and paint.!

Thank you To Willow Invitational for inviting me to participate in the Fourth Annual Willow Invitational Exhibition. I have 7 small works in this exhibition and sale. Sales are open and both online and in person.

Opening reception - Sunday, August 23rd. 1-6pm.

This year they have invited a group of 15 wonderful artists who I am so happy to show with. The exhibition and sale focuses on classical realism and others who paint from life.

With Valentine’s Day approaching all I can say is, share the love you have to give! (Now sold)I did this lush little painting as one of two short demonstrations(in September ) for Plein Air Magazine Fall Color week at Edgewood Orchard Gallery in Door County. I was honored to be asked by Gina Ward on behalf of Eric Rhodes. I invented the background as if this little bouquet of zinnias was sitting in the grass so I could talk about varied greens.

Painters, all I can say is give it a bash and enter @newsalemmuseum finalist competition. I entered last year and was so thrilled to be included and then to be recognized with the directors award….swoon. I have been putting to use the extraordinary award collection of @rosemarybrushes this past year. Go ahead and enter as they say in Scotland, give it a bash! I met so many fabulous painters at the opening and I believe it was in part this recognition that led @ryansbrown who organizes @zionpaintingretreat to invite me to demo this year. If you don’t know about the Zion Painting retreat have a look @zionpaintingretreat It is an extraordinary opportunity and will be wonderful! If you’d like to paint with me I hope you’ll consider Zion because you will get your socks knocked off by the other painters who will also be demonstrating. Here in Wisconsin I am also teaching a plein air workshop @penartdc September 9-11 enrollment opens soon . I am getting my ducks in order for a featured show in Spring @edgewoodorchardgalleries the opening is May 23 in Door County and I hope if you are around you’ll put it on your calendars. I will also be in a group show @toryfolliardgallery coming up in February. Mostly I am feeling grateful and trying to live out a life of love in action as so many are suffering. As Plein Air Magazine starts to arrive in mailboxes I’ve been getting the nicest notes & I just wanted to say thank you! I really appreciate all the kind comments regarding the work. I also appreciate all those who have purchased work this year. It really means more than you can know. I thought I’d share with you a little history of the yellow chair. I’ve been having a love affair with this chair ever since I bought it off Facebook. We had it in our son’s room first. He sat on my lap reading, as he grew Pat read to him, Half Moon Detective, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter & Italio Calvino then it moved to our girls room. The three of us cozied into this one little chair. As they got bigger, they would lay in their beds. I sat in the chair, reading The Trumpeter swan, The Bat Poet , Miss Hickory…. We took turns reading Harry Potter but Pat took the lead reading nearly all of Charles Dickens to the girls, the Pickwick papers, Oliver Twist, The Christmas Carol … our kids were always reading to themselves, we just liked to read to them at the end of the day. Now I love having the chair in the studio. But when the girls come home, we move it back to their room & inevitably, we find one of them curled up with a book.
One winter day I decided to paint it. The first video is a funny one, Pat did ask if he could help, but I said no, so he made this funny video. The current painting, Invitation 60x60 is contemplative & it is available. I’m hoping someone will emerge who purchases it & place it in a library or university or senior residence home. From my understanding, if you make a donation of a work of art, you can deduct the full amount from your taxes. If you know anyone who might be interested, please send them my way! The last video is a tradition we started with our first Christmas tree. Getting out these little bits of Christmas trees past is one of my favorite traditions. I hope it will inspire. I’ve been working on this painting again this year, (not sure that it’s done) but now titled “Invitation” 60 x 60 oil on panel . I made the painting because I love this chair. It’s not only the physical chair that I love but the memories held within it, the way it invites us to sit in its velvety yellow. The deep space vista is imagined and partly based off a plein air study and partly off of a drawing of the land that my parents now live on. Compressed into the same space as the chair, the fields of corn stubble, the suggested hay bales, the way the air opens up at the horizon puts me in two states of longing; at once immediate & tactile and at the same time distant, expansive and elusive. It is an invitation to sit, to be present, to rest in the beauty of what is, what is remembered, and what will go on. I wish you a meaningful thanksgiving. My list of gratitude is extensive… my husband, children and family at the top, but in this post I give a shout out to the amazing painter Joe Paquet @paquetjoe ( I took a workshop with him years ago). I was trying to finish this painting two days before a deadline. On a seemingly desperate whim I reached out to him and he gave me encouragement. He remarked to “carefully consider the transitions”. He said it with urgency as only a painter can. It meant a lot to me. So thank you Joe and all those who bring their full attention to help others out when needed!!!
I will likely make another post on this painting as it went through sooo many changes… life , let’s go!!!

I was recently invited to talk with @turnervinson online class and was asked “why do I paint?” I found myself encountering my answer as a I spoke it. My answer may change next time I am asked, but for now this holds some merit for me. As a side note, the question ‘what is the purpose of my paintings’ would draw out a very different answer! Wondering if this resonates with any of you who paint. It is truly a privilege to be a painter. I hope this might inspire someone who sees it to ask themselves the same question. I am grateful to have been asked because now that I am not teaching I find myself thinking a great deal, but not having as many conversations. It was a pleasure to talk with the artist’s present. Thank you Turner for the invitation.
