We’re excited to share the full program for this year’s PNW Arts + Tech Symposium, October 24–25!
So grateful to the artists, speakers, organizers, and creative community who bring this gathering to life each year!
With Anne Balsamo opening the Symposium and Ana Pinto de Silva bringing us together for closing reflections, we’re looking forward to two days of art, experimentation, workshops, and conversations exploring the changing relationships between art, technology, and culture.

“Messages to Heaven” is a memorial art installation I created with programmer Bjorn Stange. In this installation, three Nokia 3360 cell phones send text messages to deceased loved ones. Each Nokia 3360 contains a Nokia screen driven by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, both of which are housed inside the Nokia phone shell.

This project was both cathartic and very emotionally difficult. In the past 15 years, I have lost all of my family members who raised me...my dad, my grandma, and my great uncle. I don’t have much left other than a few pictures, so I decided to create an installation that would allow me to remember and communicate with them.

The Pis are running python to drive the screen, tailscale for secure access, and ansible for device management. The texts can also be updated as long as the pis are connected to wifi.

Bjorn and I won a small grant for a local art and tech hackathon, Electric Sea, during which we finished the majority of the programming and animations for the project. Shoutout to @msurguy for help with soldering! After the hackathon, where we showed a work in progress, I spent time 3D printing decorative objects to turn each phone mount into a small shrine. While this portion is not 100% finished yet, it is mostly there, and I am looking for galleries in which to show the artwork. 🤍
