Happy Mother’s Day to my mother Who had to learn how to mother With limited evidence of what such a foundational role means Which meant I got to experience the growing teams and the growing bounties of her evolution as a matriarch. What an honor and privilege it is to be the son of Patte Smith. Lord, help me with my pride Because I am indeed proud to say I am this woman’s son. My mother is a gift of my Heavenly Father! ¡SELAH!

Things that lifted my spirit this week: 1) An equal parts relaxing and skin-rejuvenating facial at @skinandtonicgirls using @biologique_recherche products and technology. Best facials of my life (thank you @amalladly) 2) Sunshine-y cuddles and ice cream at @andiasicecream. The lychee cherry blossom is my favourite of the month! 3) The mercy of these scallion blooms in my @greenstalkgarden. I planted these from cooking scraps LAST YEAR and I haven’t done a darned thing to keep them alive. And they have blessed me with these plump, happy blossoms thrusting their happy fists into the spring sunshine. 4) A cobalt blue Mexican-style cross to add to our growing collection. Covered in milagros to comment the “Milagro” (miracle) that is the cross. Thank you @fellinimc. 5) A celebratory donut run with @brendanthanavigator and the girls, and his mum (@patte_smith)! 6) You won’t catch us with a perfect lawn because look at the beauty all the “weeds” (aka natives) give us! A yard full of dandelion poms poms and delicate little blooms attracting all the bees and butterflies to our yard. 7) & 8) Two delicious bites from @christopher_prieto at @primebbq here in Raleigh: the pastrami brisket sandwich and the Cuban with authentic Puerto Rican tostones. Crunchy starchy salty goodness

If you know my mother at all, this picture should make perfect sense to you. We can be in the middle of any situation and she will find something to dig deep into. I have no recollection what in the world she was soliloquizing on in this picture but I can nearly guarantee you it had nowt to do with anything going on around us in the dizzying cacophony of light and sound and scent. It WAS, almost assuredly, something that she had thought quite a bit about and was nowhere near done thinking on. It was probably in regards to something that required mending, in the tattered ol’ broken goofball of a planet we’re spinning on. She probably had a take that could get someone’s dander up. She probably had a perspective that could make you reconsider AND could make you laugh. This woman is so small she can shop in the children’s section and I’ve watched her turn big ol’ XXL dudes into spluttering, cursing fools with just her words & entreaties to conscience. As for me, though, from newborn onesies to XL and everywhere in between, when I catch sight of her launching into her latest passionate treatise, I can’t help but get warm inside my chest and think, with hopefully a sanctified dose of pride… THAT’S MY MOM! Happy Mother’s Day.

My Mom. Or, as I called her half of the time for probably the first 16 or years of my life - “Patte.” Here she is holding a baby owl. Kind of a dream moment if not for the circumstances surrounding it. She loves birds. Coos and speaks to them in strange voices, like a little girl. A strange and imaginative little girl. She is a bundle of contrary predilections. In one moment a cackling goofball chasing screaming grandchildren (like the one pictured here who’s neither my Mother nor the one with feathers and a yellow raptor’s beak), another moment on the same day pleading sincerely and stridently and gracefully against the shedding of innocent blood in front of a murder mill. Her rearing only has a very little to do with me but, golly, I can not shake the feeling of pride (which I know is currently out of season since we are nowhere near, let alone in direct precedent of, fall). I am so proud this woman is my Mother. I also feel sorry. Sorry I pushed down the dead tree that housed this young owls nest. The silver lining is being Patte, my Mom, got to console this sweet beast and keep him warm while we waited for raptor rehab emissaries to arrive. So my shame led to maybe... a spectacular early Mother’s Day gift? Man, that was pretty sweet of me. What was I talking about...? Oh yeah, my Mother. She is legit the best Mother. I only rarely ever wanted another. And that was pretty much due to the lack of sugar-laden cereals and wealth of whole grain breads in my home growing up. She’s heroic. And self-sacrificial. And funny. And wise. And strange. I sometimes can’t believe The LORD let me descend from such a spectacular woman. Now I’m straight up crying while I write this. The mother of MY children would gently touch my face right now if she could see me. And then say “Such a Mama’s Boy.” Dang straight I am. Happy Mother’s Day, @patte_smith

Here’s more of the account of our adventure this weekend, rescuing a pair of baby owls. (Full story in my post from Sunday). My mother-in-law called the rescuer and he said the chicks are part of 8 he’s looking after right now. And God-willing, we’ll be able to go see him release them when they’re big and ready!
