We’re back with a surprise! ✨🔥

Our fourth feature film of TAFF 26's lineup—"The Cats, The Sea, and Everything In Between", directed by Lebanese director Karel Malkoun—will be part of a double feature with short film, “The Silence They Taught Us”, directed by Palestinian-Canadian director, Paula Sahyoun!

Here’s a little bit more about each work:

"The Cats, The Sea, and Everything In Between" ➡️ Karel Malkoun comes from Lebanon, but has been living in Canada for the past few years. In 2022, when the economic crisis in her native country was at its peak, she decided to visit her family there. She turned her short trip into a collage-like diary in which she reflects on her relationship with her homeland, which is in a state of protracted decay. The film is composed of spontaneous snapshots capturing the author’s stay, interspersed with inserted captions serving as personal, often poetically formulated comments and observations.

"The Silence They Taught Us" ➡️ Paula Sahyoun, a Palestinian-Canadian professional and filmmaker in Toronto, confronts the cost of silence in the face of anti-Palestinian racism. The film explores the systematic suppression and backlash faced by Palestinians and their allies in Canada, revealing how an environment of fear has been cultivated to silence voices, particularly in professional spaces, with the threat of lost livelihoods weaponized against Palestinians in exchange for silence and compliance.

Co-presented by the Lebanese Film Festival In Canada (@lffcanada), both films use autobiography to trace their filmmaker’s journey into their identities and how they intersects with the larger world around them.

As a special treat, the filmmakers will also be joining us for a Q&A!

This International Women's Day, I also wanted to celebrate Palestinian women who have shared their stories and lived experiences on The Human Challenge

1) The fierce and always gentle Paula Sahyoun, Founder of Palestine Impact Collective

2) Yara Jamal, Journalist and Community Organizer

3) Zahraa Al-Akhrass, journalist, who shared her story about workplace discrimination in the news industry

** I'm looking for more stories featuring Palestinian women, please be welcome to connect with me to share your story. **

The Human Challenge is a space for underrepresented stories, a space for the stories that are not always told, a space to remember our common humanity.

This is The Human Challenge, challenging what it means to be human, one story at a time.

Last weekend's Diary in the Diaspora workshop was truly one of a kind. Participants engaged in discussions with @kamal_riahi_author on the history, merits and challenges of diary filmmaking on Saturday. On Sunday, they all got an overview of Super8 filmmaking from @smoking.apples and each one got to shoot their own 📹

Thanks to @soulpeppertheatre, @shoufini, @renatamohamed, @robinriad for your generous support 🙏🏾
