How lucky are we?

How lucky are we to have people in our lives who push us toward a higher standard?

For me, that pursuit has created friendships built on accountability. Even years after getting out, I can call a friend and ask:

“Where am I losing points? What needs to change? Where can I be better?”

Not because there is a trophy on the line, but because the standard matters.

Performance shooting has a way of making that clear. The timer does not care about excuses. The target does not care about intentions. Your performance shows you exactly where you are-and gives you an opportunity to improve.

That being said, I believe we are beginning to see that shift within the force—and among the men and women who serve it. More people are willing to ask harder questions, measure performance honestly, seek information outside their immediate circles, and become better professionals because of it.

That is something we believe strongly in at KDS.

As a young Lance Corporal, I learned to seek information from people and communities outside my immediate circle. I understood that the answers I needed would not always be found directly in front of me.

That lesson has stayed with me and so have the people who have guided me to instill that with any student we come across.

How lucky are we?

Just slap it.

Build a trigger press that is repeatable, consistent, and realistic to the way you actually intend to perform.

Performance shooting classes are still available through @keystone_dynamic_solutions.

Course Description

When attending a rifle class with KDS, we’re not interested in babying you or keeping you at 7 yards.

We rarely spend time inside of 15 yards unless we’re conducting one of our assessments. We take pride in pushing ourselves and our students, especially when we incorporate engagements past 25 yards and expect students to deliver under pressure.

Students who attend will learn how to identify certain patterns in their training, such as over-gripping, while also learning how to set measurable metrics to increase speed and performance. We’ll also cover how to incorporate more explosive movements into your training regimen without sacrificing accuracy or efficiency.

Today we go over our staff and their experiences that have made impacts in regard to marksmanship standards.

Our jobs in the Marine Corps required us to outsource and learn from the civilian shooting realm through the competitive sports. And we want to give that same experience to you.

Let’s talk standards. If you’re military or law enforcement, that word isn’t new. At Keystone, we’ve always backed the idea that every unit and department should operate with clearly defined expectations—fitness standards, shooting standards, and equipment standards. Professionals need benchmarks.

Today we’re diving into shooting standards.

Throughout 2024 and 2025, our shooting department has been building and refining the standards we run in our courses. These aren’t random drills—we’ve tested them in class, updated them through performance evaluations, and pressure-checked them during our own instructor development. The goal: give students something measurable that actually matters.

A common trend we see with LE and military personnel?
They’ve been conditioned to train to extremely low state or agency standards. Most county and municipal quals are far too easy. And for our Marines—Table 5/6 isn’t a performance shooting standard in the modern world.

So what actually raises lethality?
What pushes skill forward?
What resets the bar?

Competition.

If you want to expose deficiencies, build confidence under pressure, and set a real performance baseline—go shoot matches. Every instructor on our shooting staff competes because it forces accountability, precision, and consistency. It’s one of the fastest ways to figure out where you really stand.

Bottom line: standards should challenge you, not comfort you.
And we’re bringing that mindset into every course we teach.

Two big takeaways from today’s drill: speed up my transitions and get more comfortable shooting fast. Big thanks to @paul_kds52 for coming out and shooting with me. Always solid getting reps in with you and getting called out on the things I need to tighten up.

I like getting the feet moving during practice when I can. I start with @xray.alpha.llc drills to see where I’m at for the week before I go to a match.

Start at the 25 shoot 2 on each target, move to the 15 same string as before, conduct a mandatory reload then move to the 7 to repeat the same string.
