POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I nearly didn’t post this because it’s incomplete. I’m grumpy. I’m rambling. I hadn’t had all the coffee yet. And I don’t really reach a conclusion. But…

Yesterday morning I was supposed to be at Buckingham Palace. @paulbenneystudios had kindly invited a few of us into the State Rooms, before anyone else was there, to see the Royal Collection and his portrait of Queen Camilla. Hence the VERY early start.

Except I didn’t go.

My kid is sick. My husband is away again with work. I’m grateful for the hours and hours and hours he puts in for us and our family (without him we’d be renting a one bedroom somewhere) but there wasn’t another adult in the house to say WOE IS ME to, so apparently I said it to all of you instead.

And yes, I know. Sick child trumps Buckingham Palace. Obviously. Every time. I am his mother and I want to be here with him.

But two things can be true all at once.

Because there is a motherhood tax. And I don’t just mean the enormous, measurable financial one. I mean the accumulation of all the things you don’t go to. The meeting you cancel, dinners where you might have met someone but hadn’t slept in days so didn’t make it, the conversation about a potential gig that happens without you, the openings, the breakfasts, the trips, the opportunity you bail on because somebody has to stay home.

And yesterday I felt it. Which somehow, while talking about portraiture and Queen Camilla, sent me down another rabbit hole: did she ever experience the motherhood tax? What does it look like at completely different levels of privilege? Does money make it disappear, or just change its shape? I don’t know. As I said: incomplete thoughts.

I sat on this Reel all day because it felt a bit too whingey and a bit too unresolved.

But it’s now day two of the aforementioned sick kid. And I’m cancelling other things again. And 😠 dear reader, I’ve been parenting for 14 years. And it is STILL hard.

So I’m posting it.

Because sometimes there isn’t a clever conclusion. Sometimes you miss Buckingham Palace and feel sorry for yourself for a minute.

It’s hard out here Mom. You’re doing great. It’s okay. And hi. Good morning folks.

I’m excited to share with you my conversation with the eminent contemporary artist, portraitist, musician and thinker, @paulbenneystudios. Paul’s artwork spans genres from Neo-Expressionism to Photorealism.

His award-winning paintings are represented in major public collections around the world, including @metmuseum in New York, @nationalgalleryaus, @nationalportraitgallery in London and even The Throne Room of Buckingham Palace. His portraits and contemporary works have been featured across television, radio and documentary programmes on all major international networks, earning him a reputation as one of the most distinguished contemporary artists working today.

Yet his creativity extends far beyond the canvas. A lifelong musician, he has recently written and released an album, Tree of Ghosts, adding another dimension to an already remarkable artistic journey.

This conversation is full of anecdotes, insights, warmth and humour covering the extraordinary life of one of our most talented yet humble creatives today. Not to be missed!
